Said human happens to be Sean, the dreamy, chubby, lifeguard/school swimmer/wanna-be film director who got dumped by his boyfriend. Some aspects of the novel that made this a 4 star instead of a 5 star: some miscommunication that I felt was pretty unavoidable and near, close but not quite cheating?

I cannot describe how much I loved that all merfolk inherently use they/them pronouns - that's such a wonderful idea and led to very important discussions about gender identities. Suffice to say, it was a humiliating disaster from start to finish that will see Truss’s name braided forever with political hubris and rank incompetency. You could tell throughout that this wasn’t supposed to be a story of failure, hence the last chapter feels a bit bolted on, with a few pages of reflection trying to elucidate themes which should have been more present throughout the whole book. At some point I felt like I was only reading it because it was like a car crash I couldn’t look away from.Into the frame comes her Machiavellian best friend, Lily Jago, who, throughout the book, is following a selfish – and entirely misguided - agenda of her own. This biography of Britain's shortest-serving Prime Minister, Liz Truss, is a basic and surface-level look at her life and career instead of the "inside story" that it claims to be. Reception for Out of the Blue was mixed, with reviewers assessing the book as having hasty and provocative prose, but also substantive and informative writing. That said, the biggest issue for me was that the narrative seemed to be having somewhat of an identity crisis with who the audience was supposed to be. There are times when they are oblivious to themselves, which is hard to believe with how much self-awareness they also possess.

For Lily – famously unforgiving – has a grudge against Faith’s husband, Peter, and is determined to get her revenge.Throughout the rest of his time as Prime Minister, he suffered from continued attacks from his own party and Cabinet on Europe, which played a role in destabilising the government. In Westminster, Truss began a steady climb up the ministerial ranks, first as a parliamentary undersecretary of state at the Department for Education, and then into cabinet as DEFRA Secretary, then Justice Secretary, then Chief Secretary to the Treasury, before heading to the Department for International Trade and ultimately becoming Foreign Secretary in 2021. You don't just luck into that; if you place third in the state, you're getting a scholarship to swim at college somewhere -- and your training would reflect that.

Full of secondary sources, rather than primary ones, this is not much more than a cut and paste job. The only really new fact I learnt was that she knew the Queen was very ill but nothing was imminent, as the book puts it, when she left Balmoral after being invited to form a government.

I like how Crest and Sean kept each other in check when the other did something they shouldn’t have… I think it was one of my favourite things!

On the screen, a slim, copper-colored woman lies slumped over a pile of broken wood and burst watermelons.Ultimately, it’s clear she wasn’t up to the job - style over substance is played out time and time again. Crest hating humans for being awful and whining about how he hates it; Sean moping about being dumped and scheming to get his ex back via rom-com tropes.
