Come Saturday evening things calmed down and I got an incredible introduction to Hunters and Gatherers. Carcassonne: 20th Anniversary Edition is a special edition of Carcassonne to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Spiel des Jahres win in 2001. Transport yourself to the old, medieval, hilltop town of Carcassonne in this tile and worker placement game that has become an absolute staple of the board game world. I think all the Carcassonne games are incredible but this one is my absolute favourite of all board games, not just Carcassonne.

If you can successfully block in an opponents meeple so that they cannot score it, making it trapped, you have instantly knocked out 20% of their scoring potential which is big! They differ though, because they also score points depending on how many fish sit within their lakes. Cities are finished when the wall encircles the encampment and are scored at 2 points for every section of tile in the city.Although you score as you go, there is a final end of game scoring, so you can never be too sure who is going to win until the end. That lets you draw and immediately place a second tile – and it’s one of twelve separate ‘bonus’ tiles.

This also means that neither you nor anyone else will ever get a chance to place a meeple on this tile later. We’ve sat with it in assorted hotel rooms around the UK, caravan parks, in bars and even in the waiting rooms of car Garages and a Sainsbury’s cafe. The puzzle-like tile placement is very satisfying when you finally get that perfect piece but can be disappointing if it doesn’t quite fit! The risk is other players hem your farmer in with road tiles, and it scores few or even zero points!

What a weekend and I really should try and get involved in another gaming weekend, albeit skipping the suicidal drinking involved with a team game of drinking chess. I have played Carcassonne a lot of times, but this is my own first physical version and I am very happy with it. Each turn a player only gets a single tile, and they need to place that tile to optimise every move. With that being said, even with its massive staying power, is there a need for Carcassonne 20 th Anniversary Edition? In addition, there are expansions that add additional tiles and new meeples to the original Carcassonne game.The game has come on holiday with me to Mexico, Spain, Italy, Scotland and up in the Alps on a skiing trip. This leads to a constant push and pull between you as a team attempting to win points and trying to fight back the ghostly infestation. All in all, it is a simple little expansion that is easily learned and used or can simply be removed if wanted. Sharing other peoples scores can very much keep you on top and is one of Carcassonne’s best features.
