About this deal

This particular watch is very special to my heart, as it's the watch I was issued in the British Army, back in 2005. This saves space and makes the dial look less crowded than the F-91W (which uses horizontal inscriptions). With the F-84W on a NATO, this is one of the lightest, thinnest watches one can wear that has the same super legibility of the F-91W.

Its bracelet is, functionally speaking, great, and you will never wonder if your strap will get "resin rot". The watch display shows the day of the week, day of the month, hour, minute, seconds and the signs PM in the afternoon – or 24H (24-hour clock) – at all times, the alarm signal status (bar of vertical lines), and the hourly signal status (double beep on the hour, shown as a bell) are present when activated in the alarm mode. I love the design of this watch, but I always forget which button does what function, as the labels are (stupidly) on the back. While the strap of the ’84’ is more pliable, it doesn’t exactly wrap around the wrist as nicely as the ’91’s. The case is primarily made of resin, [6] with a stainless steel caseback and buttons, with the manufacturer's module number, 593, stamped on the caseback. With the advancement in technology, however, some counterfeit models have also been developed to show this sign, although these are fairly uncommon. Many of the GA2100 range (or CasiOak as they're better known) have poor contrast on the dial, but not this one. It's slim and looks WAY more expensive than it actually is with the beautiful sunburst effect on the dial. I still wear both but my biggest negative against the f91 is the strap, oddly both straps are the same length!

The quartz movement, designated Module 593 [ citation needed], is powered by a single CR2016 3-volt lithium button cell.

The top left button is used to cycle through seconds, hours, minutes, month, date, day and normal mode. I never thought I’d come across a watch that would appear a tad undersized for my 6-inch wrist but the Casio F-84W is one of them.

Pressing all three buttons at the same time will fill all the cells on the LCD until any button is pressed again. Being a bit of a car guy myself, the appeal is the same when you spot a car meant for Japan and Japan alone being driven around in Malaysia – we’re talking about cars like the Toyota Mark X or Crown and not those reconditioned lux-minivans. Vostok is a Russian watchmaker who specialise in churning out very cheap mechanical watches, mostly for the Russian military.

It's a really nice looking watch and the EcoDrive is solar powered, so should never need a new battery. You see this watch all over the place, so it’s not surprising that Casio sells millions of units each year.

This one is again a customised version where I've replaced the default bezel with a Vostok aftermarket yellow bezel that matches the yellow accents on the dial. The internals are exactly the same as the 91, so it suffers from the same poor backlight and 30m of water resistance. This leaves the only method of distinguishing them as assessing the overall build quality, timekeeping accuracy, display viewing angle and the printing on the screen glass. In addition, there are plans to sell iPad and MacBook case handmade from material representative of the Nishijin-ori used to make Japanese kimonos. To further ram home the point that the Casio F-84W is the more delicate model, the resin strap is cut differently. More than a dozen detainees were cited for owning cheap digital watches, particularly "the infamous Casio watch of the type used by Al Qaeda members for bomb detonators. Actually, this aesthetic cue sums up the difference between these two very nicely – one is more rugged while the other is actually a really refined, almost-feminine take on a digital beater. If you thought the F-91W was as retro '80s as it got with Casio digitals (which it never was since it was intoduced as a 1991 model), you were wrong.
