About this deal

When Hugo, her older brother, goes to university and her younger brother is on the wrong side of the law it is left to Alice to look after her mother as she is now in a wheelchair. From happiness to cautioned, to anger and sadness, life can be more than overwhelming at times for Alice who thinks that staying away from people would be the safest option, or at least find a way of limiting contact to live her life as she wants. Alice doesn’t like bright sunlight, seeing people’s colors gives her a headache and she doesn’t like people touching her. This was my first title by Cecilia Aherne and I was thoroughly engrossed in the story and am now keen to discover more of her writing. In a Thousand Different Ways by Cecelia Ahern is only the second book I’ve read by the Irish author, best known for PS I Love You.

In a Thousand Different Ways - Goodreads Farah’s review of In a Thousand Different Ways - Goodreads

Freckles was about a young woman trying to work out ‘who’ she was through those with whom she’s connected. a rich tapestry, full of characters seeking love and acceptance on their life's journey' Patricia Scanlan 'Such a beautiful, tender and moving story' Sinead Moriarty 'Highly original, fresh and exciting' Hazel Gaynor Cecelia Ahern's book In a Thousand Different Ways was a Sunday Times bestseller w/c 17-04-2023.Her brother Hugh is encouraging Alice to strive out on her own after school when her mother’s diagnosed with cancer and younger brother – who Alice has seen absorbing her mother’s dark moods – is jailed. Ahern's books tend to have some small fantasy element to it, but the premise of this one completely fascinates me. This book was an unforgettable sojourn into the very depth of human emotions and dynamic characters. Alice Kelly is eight when she notices everyone has a color, it displays what the person is feeling, their mood and much more.

In a Thousand Different Ways by Cecelia Ahern | Waterstones

When she goes off to school for difficult children (with anger issues and lack of concentration) due to her mother and later come back home as a carer for her now invalid mother - the events are more fill in the blanks. Alice starts wearing sunglasses to school, the teachers don’t understand why she needs them inside and they suggest she attends Clearview Academy. Alice develops the ability to see people's emotions as auras and how this interacts between different people. There are some big leaps forward in time, but for the most part I didn't felt that I needed to know the detail of what had happened in the intervening years. Alice has a special gift and can see people's auras in colours and sense their moods and what's going on for them. All of the characters and the settings were beautifully written and Alice’s journey through the book was filled with real lows. At times, it's overwhelming for her feeling everyone's emotions, so she hides away from the world and only interacts with very few people.

In a Thousand Different Ways by Cecelia Ahern Book review: In a Thousand Different Ways by Cecelia Ahern

I was fortunate to get an advance copy of this book via NetGalley (I chose it because of the cover) and I am glad that I did because it did not disappoint in subject or characters. The story follows Alice through her life and the detrimental effect that her ability has on her interactions with others. The descriptions of the colours related to a persons mood or character must have taken a lot of thought and connected up different elements of the story well.

I haven't read anything by Cecila Ahern for quite some time, but when I saw this on Netgalley, I had to request a copy.

You could hear a word and it has a colour to it, you may read a word such as “street” and smell oranges. One single Narrator managed to effectively not do every single character’s distinctive voice but their tone, accent, country of origin and even dialects! I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influenced my review of the book.
