About this deal

With diabolical ingenuity, [Winterson’s] found a way to inject fresh questions about humanity’s future into the old veins of Frankenstein. When Vicky arrived my mother gave her a wool blanket she had knitted so that Vicky would not be cold. The Lion, The Unicorn and me, a humorous telling of the birth of Jesus, narrated by the donkey who carried Mary. She loves the traditions of Christmas and dislikes its commercialisation, though acknowledges wryly that the story starts with a demand for money (tax) and ends with gifts (a child, then gold, frankincense, and myrrh).

Christmas Days: 12 Stories and 12 Feasts for 12 Days - Goodreads Christmas Days: 12 Stories and 12 Feasts for 12 Days - Goodreads

The book alternates between twelve pieces of short fiction (“stories”) and twelve personal essays ending with recipes (“feasts”). A really moving story about moving on after the death of a loved one, who appears to his partner for a final christmas eve farewell.Twelve stories are too many to talk about individually so I will attempt to give a little flavour of the whole book by focusing a little on some of my favourites. An eclectic mix of stories, recipes, and memories, Christmas Days brings together a series of imaginative holiday writings. This was a charming holiday-enemy-to-holiday-lover trope and the holiday spirit has only intensified with each day of reading these (especially as its snowing HARD right now).

I’’s just a jump to the left… The dialogue is slick and funny, often delightfully obscene, but beneath all the kookiness, Winterson is satirizing sexual politics and exploring complicated issues of human desire… A bag of provocative tricks and treats. She adapted Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit for BBC television in 1990 and also wrote "Great Moments in Aviation," a television screenplay directed by Beeban Kidron for BBC2 in 1994. The volume opens with ‘Christmas Tide’ an introductory essay by the author, ruminating on what Christmas is and where it, and all those traditions we take for granted come from. Miracles are not what we expect (an obscure man and woman find themselves parenting the Saviour of the World).
