Description

Dead Lions is at once a finely wrought thriller and a farcical, fiercely pointed tale of political greed and bureaucratic corruption. We know quite a lot about Catherine Standish, for example, when we are told that she ignores cats because ‘having a cat is one small step from having two cats, and to be a single woman within a syllable of 50 in possession of two cats is tantamount to declaring life over. And most of them would do anything to get there — even if it means having to collaborate with one another. For another, the job she turns out to have been hired for—leading an investigation her new boss doesn’t feel he can entrust to his own force—makes her queasy.Dander’s character arc, for example, can only really be seen through the prism of her developing friendship with Longridge. Lamb’s tempting Catherine to drink again was just cruel and unnecessary, a step too far for that particular characterisation. Apple TV+ today unveiled the trailer for the much anticipated second season of “Slow Horses,” the globally acclaimed espionage series starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman, which will make its global debut on Friday, 2 December. The reason for the absentee is the subject of the cat and mouse game with which the author presents us. Lamb – I do feel I have to include him – there is much I dislike about him but he is also engaging and loyal when his team are threatened (by anyone other than himself) and yes he does, as The Guardian interview with Herron suggests, bear echoes of Falstaff, unlikeable but compelling in a horrible way.

At the same time the writing is so clear and the narrative so cleverly conducted that I didn’t have to re-read any of it understand what was going on. From the Intelligence Service purgatory that is Slough House, where disgraced spies are sent to see out the dregs of their careers, Jackson Lamb is on his way to Oxford, where a former spook has turned up dead on a bus. BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Ah yes, and that I am doing, but unfortunately not enough e-copies at the library, so have ended up in the most recent book (Bad Actors). There is one moment that nearly made me stop reading the book and give up: he doesn’t just drink in front of the recovering alcoholic Catherine; he doesn’t just offer her a drink; he pours and places a drink in front of her!

Guess I will have to wait for Joe Country (suspecting that is the needed volume) to become available. He, River, Min and Louisa arrive at the property but upon entry discover it empty aside from Moe's beheaded corpse. Mind you, I am not the only one who took their time coming across this series: Dead Lions wasn’t able to find a UK publisher for years and sank without a trace initially according to The Guardian, and Waterstones made Slow Horses their thriller of the month seven years after it first publication. It is revealed that Partner was the former Director General of MI5, and officially committed suicide as he was being blackmailed by a foreign intelligence service. The Secret Hours is set around the time of or after Bad Actors but includes a section set well before the series begins.

On the strength of Mick Herron’s writing in Dead Lions I am tempted to go back and read some of his earlier works. The service can’t decide whether this man exists, or is just a myth invented by the Russians to keep MI5 agents chasing their tails. The plot here did stretch credibility a little but was, I felt, a little more coherent than the first one: a old retired spy – the incongruously named Dickie Bow – was found dead on a replacement bus service, a death which is dismissed by all except Lamb as natural. He decides that further investigation is required and recruits another officer from Slough House to assist him.
