In the story, Minoru, who becomes "a-Kira" mentions that students now study Kira and the effects he had on society. I don't think anyone who hasn't read or watched Death Note should start their journey into this series from here. It takes place two years after the original manga’s ending and there’s a new ‘Kira’ on the loose but this time, focusing on their attention on killing off 60+ year olds. Four Panel Comics--These are some short, newspaper-style comics that are fun jokes but don't add much if anything to the greater mythology. It was mostly for fun, even if some of the jokes were meh, and it came with a downside, they were incredibly short bonuses.

Promising, too, that we were getting short stories, somewhat self-contained riffs on the set-up, rather than a full-blown sequel attempting to match (or worse, exceed) the scale and complexity of the original. Death Note: Short Stories is an anthology of short works set in the Death Note world that were originally published separately. But the story is mostly centred on Near, who is now fully in the ‘L’ role, and we get a little flashback into his past on his first introduction with the original L as well as how he’s doing since Light passed away. It won't take you ten minutes to read through them all, and overall, I think this is the most unnecessary section in the collection.

In 2013, Midora gives Ryuk the spare notebook back and informs him that she didn't succeed with creating a new Kira. All in all, this was an okay volume for fans of the original series, but not essential reading unless, for some reason, you want to see more of Near in action (although "Near inaction" is probably more accurate).

While most of the stories in this volume are far from being something new, it is a great addition to have all of them in one place, especially now that they are all available in English. Tanaka, however, is a smart student but doesn’t apply himself, seeing school as not the only means to express intelligence; we also see him listening to his music and to other people having conversations, internalising it rather than speaking out loud, the complete opposite of Light. The next and newest addition is the "a-Kira" story, which takes place immediately after the events of the last story where Ryuk has obtained another Death Note. Overall this was a great collection, I loved seeing more stories about the Death Note and their characters and I think my students will love it too. Even though most of the stories in Death Note Short Stories were previously published, there is still value in having this collection of stories together, especially for original Death Note fans and collectors.So when Ryuk comes to Earth and decides to give the Death Note to Minoru Tanaka, a highly intelligent high school student, he can’t exactly repeat Kira’s previous actions…but that doesn’t mean he can’t use it at all!
