About this deal

The book includes an introduction by Michael Rosen and an audio CD of the book, with all the poems also read by Michael. Nightmare' about a boy on the underground doesn't appear as though it works but once again, read aloud and most certainly when listened to be the author, it works to perfection. These short poems would be perfect to use within English lessons and when exploring phonics and different language techniques. I loved it – and more to the point, my six-year-old read the whole thing in one sitting, and then proceeded to read the poems to me.

One of the first things I learned when I started work as a press officer in 1997 was that it’s perfectly acceptable.Michael Rosen is a poet with a rambling gift who shows how far from ordinary are the most ordinary of events. The book had me smiling from start to finish, it was a wonderful read and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. Quentin Blake's illustrations provide an added dimension not always referred to in the poems as well as complementing the comedy. This volume includes Michael Rosen's 'You Can't Catch Me' and 'Don't Put Mustard in the Custard' with illustrations added by the incomparable Quentin Blake.

My favourite poem in the collection, which I have read aloud to my Year 1 class is 'You Can’t Put Mustard in the Custard'. You Can’t Catch Me' won the Signal Poetry Award in 1982, and both books went on to become bestsellers.I loved this book and think it is great for grabbing children's interest, as it emphasizes how fun and light hearted poetry can be. We are often So consumed by time and schedules that we completely bypass the wonderful amount of things there are to procrastinate with in the bathroom like the boy in “ Bathroom Fiddler”. And the words that he uses in many of them indicate that very fact, he has picked them up and put them together to make onomatopoeic poems that are a delight to read aloud or, as is possible with this volume, to listen to on the associated CD. Please excuse the unidentified smears of what I can only assume is food on the front cover there – a sign that a book has been truly loved by children.

The book is illustrated by Quentin Blake whose bold outlined, messy haired and ever so expressive characters are instantly recognisable, especially to any child of the 80s like me.There are funny poems, sad poems, poems that touch on all different aspects of childhood and everyday family life. This book is an excellent collection of short poems by Michael Rosen and the distinguished illustrations of Quentin Blake.

It would be a wonderful drama task for children to perform the poems or simply to read for some light relief. Repetition is used to humorous effect in many of these poems which centre around everyday life and relationships with parents, siblings and friends.Today is World Poetry Day and to celebrate I thought I would review a book of poems by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Quentin Blake– Don’t Put Mustard in the Custard. This book is aimed at children in key stage one and early key stage two, it could be used in the classroom to show children that creativity and expression is important when writing poems. Michael Rosen, a recent British Children’s Laureate, has written many acclaimed books for children, including WE'RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, and I’M NUMBER ONE and THIS IS OUR HOUSE, both illustrated by Bob Graham.
