About this deal

Edward begins his journey by travelling on The Queen Mary passenger liner, a ship that was in service from 1936 to 1967. Inspired by my friends successful reading of it with her two (slightly) younger children, I bravely undertook this venture - for it was really me I was worried about being able to "handle" it.

Electricity, internet, and the basics were not a guarantee, so my desire for this book quickly faltered into a small, fleeting recognition of love every short once in a while. The ending was beautiful and watching Edward's character change and grow was a great insight in to how when you fall from grace you become humble. From here he is rescued by a fisherman, who takes him home and provides him with a new name, a new identity and a new family. She can wring my heart following the trials of two lonely children and a caged tiger, and bring tears to my eyes for a brave little lovesick mouse, but why should I care what happens to an arrogant, over-dressed china rabbit? As Edward lives with new people and hears their often tragic stories, he begins to not only understand love, but he begins to feel it as well.

Take the velveteen rabbit, make him more fragile by making him the China rabbit, put in Kate DiCamillo's voice behind every word, and you have a new classic for children. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane builds on 'The Velveteen Rabbit' (he is three feet tall and anticipates Russell Hoban's 'The Mouse and his Child'. I'm not a children's literature reader but was curious about this one after completing Ann Patchett's latest memoir where she praises Kate DiCamillo's works. The story is about a princess who never feels love, and it ends with the princess being turned into a warthog, killed, and eaten. This is a worthwhile read for any adult and would be an especially terrific book to read along with a child. He is soon separated from Abilene, and the novel chronicles Edward’s life with the various people who save him.
