But instead of turning left down the corridor to join all the happy, exhausted new mothers and their mewling newborns, we peeled off to the right. Readers who might have read - and enjoyed “Seating Arrangements”,by Maggie Shipstead, or any of Herman Koch books -should feel at home with Elizabeth Day’s “The Party”.Class anxiety, status anxiety, sexual anxiety, social anxiety, pregnancy anxiety, fashion anxiety, even footwear anxiety. I wore a Kate Halfpenny dress and an organza cape, tied in a bow at the neck, and it felt just right for this season of lush new beginnings. The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's membership magazine, and in our weekly " Publishing This Week" newsletter. We imagine our bond will be forged through a shared interest – a hobby, maybe, like a book club or finding each other in the local yoga class every Saturday. It helps you feel less alone if other people – including celebrities who appear to have it all – admit there were times when they felt their life was a mess.We booked a honeymoon in Bali and Thailand, naively believing everything would have cleared up by spring and we’d be able to fly to the beach to decompress. There is the background of how Martin, the poor son of a domineering mother, managed to achieve a scholarship to a minor public school, where he meets Ben. Everything changes when he impresses golden boy Ben Fitzmaurice and the two quickly become best friends, so inseparable that Martin spends summers with Ben's family and, eventually, they head to the same Cambridge college together.

The Party by Elizabeth Day review – well-paced literary

It’s immediately obvious that something happened at Ben’s party, and as the plot progresses the story slowly begins to unfold from four different angles; Martin’s interview with the police in the wake of the party; the night of the party itself, flash-backs to Martin and Ben’s blossoming friendship through school and university and, finally, diary entries from Martin’s wife Lucy.About a friendship between two boys growing up, ending in a very dark story with two dramatic events which determine the storyline and tragic outcome. It turns out to be a party to celebrate one woman's getting appointed to a government position, a number of friends come over to her house.

It also meant outdoor dining on two tables (because of the rule of six), rather than the wedding reception we’d envisaged, with one long communal table and dancing into the early hours. Amid the hundreds of guests–the politicians, the celebrities, the old-money and newly rich–Martin once again feels that disturbing pang of not-quite belonging. I am a great movie fan, I have written almost 5,000 reviews here over the past 20 years, in general I really like British movies, but this one is definitely a movie for only a very narrow section of movie fans. I started listening to a lot of podcasts during that time, because music seemed too resonant with my heartbreak. It gets a bad rap and of course there are dark sides to all social media, but it’s given me a platform I never had before. The sort of book you want to savour, but equally one whose captivating nature makes it impossible to put down, The Party’s unlikeable cast of characters, pacy plot and a clever climax at the its finale, has found itself a firm place in my favourite reads of 2018. Any time I get a negative review, I remind myself there are people out there who don’t like cheese, so there’s no accounting for taste.
