The epitome, of ready-made pop, they’re as hummable as they are hackneyed, but because the singer treats them more seriously than they deserve, they sound lifeless. This is the first Elton John album without lyricist Bernie Taupin, and the last Elton John album of any real rock merit. The next two tracks are the B-sides of "Part-Time Love" and "Song for Guy" ("I Cry at Night" and "Lovesick" respectively), and the last track, "Strangers", originally B-side of his 1979 disco-album title track, "Victim of Love".Perhaps it’s only fitting that the best song on an Elton John album without Bernie Taupin is an instrumental. It is the first of John's albums not to feature long-time collaborators Bernie Taupin (lyricist) and Gus Dudgeon (producer). Curiously, John had performed "Part-Time Love" at the USSR shows without objection from Soviet officials. A Single Man demonstrates just how thin the line really is between disposable radio pop and elevator music, and suggests that for all of Elton John’s public whining about not being taken seriously, the only thing that’s ever mattered to him is that the hits keep coming. The 1998 reissue has five bonus tracks, the first two being the 1978 flop single " Ego" and its B-side "Flinstone Boy".

Guinness Book of Records 2009 states that "Candle in the Wind 1997" is the "best-selling single since charts began"; however, not of all time. He has had 57 top 40 hits in the United States, with 27 of these hitting the top ten and 9 reaching number one. In the US, A Single Man was certified gold in October 1978 and platinum in November of the same year by the RIAA. His band has gone through several lineup changes, but Olsson, Davey Johnstone, and Ray Cooper have been members, albeit not continuously, since 1970, 1971 and 1973 respectively.As with many of John's releases of the late 1970s and the 1980s, it received generally mixed reviews from critics.
