About this deal

Some use of modern music might catch some’s attention and feel a bit off but I personally found it to work. His body language, voice, singing, dancing, and expressions are so spot on that it's uncanny at times that it's not the real Elvis on screen. The story here is told from a very unique perspective with narrative all throughout from the view of Elvis’s infamous manager “Colonel Tom Parker” (portrayed here by Tom Hanks). So many tales (apocryphal or otherwise), so much footage, so many fans and so many who will claim to already know the life of the man simply known as ‘The King’.

This sound mix is just massive and really pulls you right into the story as well as most obviously the unforgettable musical experience. It can also drop to bitrates as low as 39Mbps at times, however, it mostly cruises around 50 to 60Mbps for the majority of the movie.Thankfully Warner gave us matching Dolby Atmos mixes on both the Blu-ray and the 4K disc, so either way you go the audio will immerse and surround you.

I don’t know what or why certain titles get Paramounted, but Blue Hawaii wasn’t subjected to the treatment and comes in with a glorious 2160p Dolby Vision transfer. Finally, disk compression appears to be consistent and very good, with no noticeable artefacts observed – bit rates average in the low 70s mbps for the most part across the entire film, with the odd peak nudging just under 100 mbps during specific scenes, all of which were observed with a quick scan through the film’s playback information for those that like numbers. Now, about that title: Elvis isn’t really a biopic about the legendary singer and his meteoric rise to fame. Closeups reveal amazing makeup applications, individual jet black hairs, and the incredible textures in each of the King's outfits with each jewel shining brightly. The King of Rock ‘N Roll trades in his blue suede shoes for a pair of sandals and a surfboard as Elvis Presley headlines the song and dance beach romp Blue Hawaii. Elvis’s parents, Vernon Presley ( Richard Roxburgh) and Gladys Presley ( Helen Thomson), want their son to be happy and are very supportive of his pursuit to be a musical performer as we see here in the film.

The sequences when Elvis is younger give way to a sandier image full of muted greens, blues, and browns. The slight softening of the image around the edges of the frame and within it as a result of the anamorphic process employed and those custom lenses seems perfectly apt for the period and isn’t as obtrusive at all as one might suspect. Of course, the story ends where we know it does, but it’s the journey along the way that blows our socks off. Grain is added in (as none is naturally present due to its digital origins) and it’s amazing what they can do with this now – granted, it’s never overt (apart from when the use of lower res footage is included by design) but it’s there, it’s mostly very fine and it does indeed help give the impression of film. However, for a film this large about an artist this significant it feels like they should maybe have included more historical footage or performances by the real Elvis Presley. Luhrmann's direction and the film's editing, there's just too much wrong (or at least off) to ignore. Sadly bonus features aren’t all that much to sing about, but the audio commentary is worth checking out.
