One frustration is that there’s no cancel button to switch between programmes – you have to remove the food to reset it or flick it off at the socket. This includes chicken breasts, steak and vegetables, usually asparagus if in season or corn on the cob if not. I was impressed with its quick preheat time and solid performance on items such as chicken breast and steak, despite being a little disappointed at the lack of controls and temperature settings. Another bonus is that once cooled, cleaned and dried, the vertical storage of the grill, along with its general compactness, allows it to slot nicely into a cupboard without taking up much space in a crowded kitchen.

Cooking steak to the desired level of doneness can be challenging at the best of times, but more so on a grill, where it’s hidden between plates. Moreover, if you’ve been using your oven to cook these foods, a grill will be faster and save electricity every time. Similarly, if you’ve owned an older grill and are about to upgrade, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the latest features on offer – from smokeless grills that prevent your kitchen filling up with greasy smells, to those that can even be used outside.Described as an intelligent health grill, it boasts a sensor that adjusts the grilling time to the thickness of the food. Perhaps a step too far in being barebones, the Immersa doesn’t even have an on/off switch, instead needing to be plugged in or unplugged to start or finish the heating process. These include heating elements built into the removable plates, so they heat up fast; independently controlled plates, so you can set one to be hotter than the other when in the open position; adjustable height control for the upper lid so food isn’t squashed; a lid lock; a floating hinge; and a flat plate.

It’s great for taking the guesswork out of using a grill, with much less chance of burnt or undercooked food. They trickle into an integral drip tray, which simply slides out from the side after cooking for a thorough clean. It’s all down to the holes in the bottom grill plate, which allow juices and fat to drain away immediately, rather than leaving them sitting on the surface, where they’d burn. You can now enjoy all that amazing grilled, healthy food like steaks, fish and charred veggies, with all the dressings, marinades and sticky sauces you want, but without any of the stress of clean-up! The huge range of models means that if you haven’t previously owned a George Foreman grill, choosing one can be confusing. On the plus side, even though the non-stick plates are fixed, we found them easy to clean, with all the mess wiping away without much effort. The temperature range is especially flexible, dipping down as low as 100°C for slow cooking, with a high of 240°C for meat.

The grill has been designed to be used in the closed position, so its indicator lights are on the lid. It also doesn’t tip forward like classic George Foreman grills so that fat can run away quickly, and we found it pooled around our meat.It uses the same system of holes in the plate as the Smokeless Grill 28000 we’ve also reviewed, with the difference of a flat design that gives plenty of room for all your barbecued goodies. As per the manual’s estimations, the steak came to medium rare in under five minutes, while the chicken breasts took the full recommended cooking time of 12 minutes.
