Glenlivet 18 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky The Glenlivet 18 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

WPT - it's just like you don't drink gentle white wines after a big heavy red - you just don;t taste much because the red has overwhelmed your palate. The Glenmorangie 10 whisky is a complex and delightful dram, with a nose of tart lemon, juicy nectarine, crisp apple, and subtle spice. The 40% ABV keeps Glenlivet’s 15 year old at the perfect strength, providing enough intensity without overwhelming my taste buds and allowing me to appreciate its subtle yet complex flavours to their fullest extent. This excellent 18 year old single malt Scotch whisky from Glenlivet is a classic Speyside dram, matured in a combination of first and second fill American oak and sherry casks.

Glenlivet 18 Year Old Old Presentation - The Whisky Exchange Glenlivet 18 Year Old Old Presentation - The Whisky Exchange

Both whiskies are excellent choices for those who appreciate complexity in their drams but Glenmorangie 10 may be preferred by those looking for more intense flavours due to its higher ABV strength as well as its unique character imparted by the combination of American white oak casks used in its maturation process. I probably should give each one a second chance, so I anticipate that it will be quite a while before I submit another review. The distillery DNA and American oak flavors are more noticeable from start to end, while he ex-sherry notes like the dates, cherries and milk chocolate are sparingly present on the nose and finish. I can see that the Total Wine pricing, which I think is justified, may have led me to becoming more generous with the other pricing of the 12.I would prefer to see it bottled at 46% ABV or higher, and without E150a (caramel colouring) and unchill-filtered, but as far as rich, rounded, sherried Speyside whiskies go, this one is pretty darned good. Over the course of 18 years, our Master Distiller, Alan Winchester, takes this expression through a combination of cask types, including both first and second-fill American oak (for tropical fruitiness) and ex-sherry oak (for spicy complexity). There’s a long, rubbery, kind of sharp finish that leaves a mark on your senses, an enjoyable dram from start to finish, and in my mind excellent value for an 18 year single malt. Created by master distiller Alan Winchester, The Glenlivet 18 is a 40 percent alcohol volume (80 proof)single malt whiskyaged for 18 years. Here it is, the last in my series of reviews of The Glenlivet range and I’m not ashamed there were a few small tears forming in the crescent of my eye while I tasted this on.
