While listening to the funniest parts, I was laughing out loud from behind my mask as I was jogging, which probably made a ridiculous sight and I'm sure a number of early morning commuters who saw me assumed I was insane. Afterward, he signs up in the Royal Air Force to fight in the Second World War and has near-death experiences in Europe and the Sahara. Dahl first began writing short stories for adults that were extremely popular in America and it was only in 1961 that he wrote James and the Giant Peach. On three occasions my Hurricane was badly shot up, but the riggers in 80 Squadron were magicians at patching up holes in the fuselage or mending a broken spar.

Almost every year there would be a new book by Roald Dahl which would be passed around at school and discussed with great seriousness. At the door of the Ops Room three or four other pilots were standing around and I noticed that each one of them was as wet as I was. While the scenery was spectacular and the people highly entertaining, the rumblings of war could be heard on the horizon.

So we now had seven half-serviceable Hurricanes left in Greece, and with these we were expected to give air cover to the entire British Expeditionary Force which was about to be evacuated along the coast. Lanky, yet determined, Dahl is an unlikely pilot-in-training before he became a key member of the effort in North Africa. I wished I could sometimes have had a friendly wing-tip alongside me, and more importantly, a second pair of eyes to help me watch the sky behind and above. Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. As was apparent in Fortress Malta: An Island Under Siege 1940-43, the British high command was halfhearted in implementing Churchill's policy, as well as ensuring dissemination of the hard learned lessons of the Battle of Britain to fliers in other theaters of war. I recently listened to the audiobook narrated brilliantly by Dan Stevens (highly, highly recommended) on an early morning solitary run. He experiences the remnants of colonial British life, filled with eccentric characters, and is thrown into a world as bizarre and surprising as any you will find in his fiction. When war breaks out, Mdisho, full of martial enthusiasm, beheads a German sisal owner, ‘a very wealthy and extremely unpleasant bachelor’, with Dahl’s antique sword.

All negative issues relating to Colonialism aside (I'm not going to go there and neither does Dahl) I completely understand what he means. Dahl's relaxed narrative envisages a cosy fire and glass of whiskey, reminiscent of an afternoon with your granddad. I went up four separate times on 20 April, but it was the first of these sorties that I will never forget. In 1938, Dahl embarks on a ship to his new job in Africa, experiencing his first, eye opening encounters with British civil servants. The novel alludes to the British colonization of Africa as Dahl travels to the colonies in East Africa.
