Consider the cross at Melksham, standing in a place outside the church, not as you might suppose on the main traffic artery (as at Chudleigh) but in a dead-end off it. This and That: Cullen uses this phrase to refer to the content within an urban environment, including the meaning or significance of a place, often rooted in its history, function, or the cultural values of its inhabitants. Far better to obtain the feeling of space and openness by sweeping away the railings and laying down a paved floor throughout. In Townscape’s attempt to address social anxieties of that age, a certain deviation from good manners was encouraged as a means of reinforcing the rules.
