Try filtering the water through a buff or handkerchief ahead of treating the water to reduce sediment if necessary. While it might be difficult to assess different categories of water treatment products (for example, chemical treatment versus a hand pump), the metrics used to evaluate each filter offer helpful insight into which products excel in one area or another. Still, imagine if Apple had so much faith in their products rather than that crappy 1-year warranty they offer…? Products are available that offer high-quality components and reliability with minimal durability issues. What’s definitely true is that this pack offers excellent fit, quality and performance thanks to good weatherproofing, well-designed straps and an innovative back panel.
I’m 5’7 and a size 12 and tried out the M-L, which fit my back very well, with little adjustment needed for a comfortable fit. The Katadyn products and the MSR Guardian offered the most consistent performance overall, with these working best in turbid conditions. The Aether AG 70 is built to handle 60-pound heavy loads with total comfort (although I hope your pack doesn’t have to be this heavy). I think it is worth investing in a good quality backpack that will last you for years, but this is quite an investment for a broke backpacker. I found myself using buses to get around (so the dimensions didn’t matter) andI carried that bag up volcanos and over mountains.Personally, I’m not 100% convinced of the benefits of the heat molding as the shape seems to bounce back pretty quickly. There’s also a lightweight stuff sack included that you can pop over the backpack for protection if you want to use the Antigravity as a checked-in bag. I can safely confirm I am now and will always be a KP fan, not just for the quality of the products but for all the little details too, right down to the little (unexpected) have written note included in my exceptionally quickly shipped package. If you want to add a backup to your emergency kit, check out the Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets, which have a 5-year shelf life but a strong chemical flavor. I usually keep the divider in place unless I need the bag’s entire space for my diving fins or camera tripod.
The Katadyn Pocket was recently redesigned with a new grip handle and a longer outlet hose to increase efficiency and maximum comfort while water moves through the system. Moreover, I think the Osprey integrated daypack is designed better than Gregory’s Baltoro (Osprey’s main competitor) removable daypack, which seems flimsier.We never achieved the advertised rate of flow for the Platypus QuickDraw, but averaged around 44 seconds per liter. The lightest filtration systems out there are on-the-go systems like the collapsable Katadyn BeFree, Lifestraw Personal Filter, Aquamira Frontier Max, and LifeStraw Peak Squeeze. The soft bottle top is adaptable to other compatible bottles, and the filter can be removed to carry water between sources.
In our sludge tests, all the pump filters except the MSR Guardian needed to be cleaned out after processing every liter. Of the treatments, the MSR Aquatabs, Potable Aqua Purification Tablets, and Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets can simply be put into a little baggy without requiring you to carry the whole bottle, helping to eliminate weight. The MSR Guardian placed second, filtering a liter in 37 seconds and maintaining performance even in the murkiest of water. This self-contained UV light water purifier is super convenient and an option we'd recommend when considering international travel or where a clear water source might contain a virus.Still, if you require a purifier for international travel or one that offers a backflush system for turbid water, this model provides reliability that's worth the initial investment.
