Description

A hilarious book with a twist in the tail about getting - and getting rid of - the grumps from New York Times best-selling author, Ed Vere. High on the mountain slopes of the Cape Fold Mountains in Southwestern South Africa lives an unusual, yet delightful small burrowing frog species. Through his adventures, children can learn about colours (literally and figuratively), feelings, and the theme of friendship (which is why I tagged this book under 'concepts'). A rather neat moral tale that's brilliantly written and illustrated with a kind of frog-like frisson of energy and intensity, as you'd expect from Ed. Though it is a very simple story with few words, the depth of discussions can be branched out in several layers and directions.

The protected fynbos habitat is also home to species of tortoise, mice, sunbirds and butterflies, to name a few. We had various discussions over the course of many days relating to the colour green - green fruit, green objects, green clothes, green animals and any green we could see when we were out and about.

Black rain frogs can inflate their bodies with air to make themselves look far large than they are usually, to deter approaching predators as a defence mechanism. Their preferred habitat is amongst the fynbos, a unique type of heathland found only in this part of the world. If these methods fail, the black rain frog will dig itself into the soil before an attacker has a chance to strike. A wonderful book for EYFS/KS1 that follows a grumpy frog getting to grips with trying new things and being kind. Lizzie picked up on the colour aspect strongly, particularly as she has a contrasting view about the colour pink.I did somewhat enjoy the book but the wittiness of the author may be too hard for children to get it. Grumpy Frog" by Ed Vere is a charming and humorous children's book that tells the story of a grumpy frog who learns to appreciate the little things in life.
