About this deal

But in each case, whether it be Alex or Sasha, they both lead of life of honor, hard work and commitment. The ending has a twist too, but to me, it still didn't clearly explain the logic behind the first twist. As for the ending, well, I cannot spoil it for you because I am not sure what happened; I cannot tell you who lives and who dies although the final line reveals the identity of one character who has been alluded to throughout.

The family also had a dozen liveried servants who stood behind each chair to serve the meals that had been prepared by three cooks, who never seemed to leave the kitchen. I think I would only feel comfortable recommending this book to readers that have not read The Clifton Chronicles before.Hearts It is a simple game a lot of us play to make a decision… Heads you Win - Tails you Lose… But do you ever wonder if the decision was the right one after all? In the other version of the story, Karpenko, here referred to as Alex, and his mother move to New York, where he grows up to be a hustler/entrepreneur, marries well, is named the chairman of a bank, and becomes involved in financial- and art-world chicanery. I love Jeffrey Archer books but as I read this one I felt that I had read this book before in lots of places. His tummy began to rumble, and he wondered if his mother had been able to smuggle any tidbits out of the officers’ club, where she was the cook. The last sentence in ‘Heads You Win’ was akin to a slap across the face - a kind of “that’s what you get for not being perceptive enough to recognise what was right in front of you the whole time”!

A bit of adversity, however, doesn’t prevent Sasha from helping his mother move over the course of time from chef to acclaimed restaurant owner. The others offer the needed narrative mortar to keep the story moving and standing strong, though Archer has rarely had trouble making someone who graced the pages of his books appear full of life and active in pushing the story towards its needed conclusion. Thuli Madonsela speaks about the importance of SA's political future in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. And of course, for us in England, it’s where Mother Teresa started her great work and became the legend that she is. Telling a political, social, and emotional story of one boy’s ultimate choice to flee oppression, Archer offers two distinct paths that could have been taken. What makes this character even more interesting, is the contrast that comes from his alter ego—for lack of a better word—and how the contrasting decisions lead both men in completely different directions, though their paths seem destined to lead to the same ultimate goal. Sally has cut , styled, tinted and cared for my hair as it has turned grey and gone back to the blonde of my youth ! While he scrabbles to get enough money to feed them, Alex discovers that his hard work can pay off, beginning by selling produce at a local stand and amassing wealth through grit and determination.

I really enjoyed the descriptions of the changes in Russia (and lack of them) over the years and the excursions into the art world. But his future plans take a sudden turn when his father is assassinated by the KGB for defying the state. I loved hi recent series and wished he would continue with that, however this book was well written and kept my attention throughout. So begins a twin storyline, a storyline that follows them to both locations, or what would have been their lives after chosing which destination.

Heads You Win is Jeffrey Archer’s first standalone novel in almost 10 years, and follows the story of Alexander Karpenko as he flees from Russia and makes a decision on the flip of a coin that will affect how the rest of his life unfolds. Be it Kane and Abel, The Clifton Chronicles, or many of the other pieces he has penned over the decades, Archer’s flavourful storytelling comes alive yet again, in what may be his best single novel work in years. Alexander’s father has been assassinated whilst carrying out his duties at the docks where he was a well liked and respected foreman - his crime? She smiled again, and began to empty her pockets, producing a large potato, two parsnips, half a loaf of bread, and this evening’s prize, a steak that had probably been left on an officer’s plate after lunch. We are proud to have Erica as a member of the HYW Team, she attended Cosmetology school at one of charleston’s elite institutions.

I don’t approve of nepotism,” said Alexander, as they strolled across the schoolyard and out onto the street. All the regular archer plot points are covered - Chess, Auction, Close elections, board meeting, art heists you name it. He delivers a good, exceptional guy, up against a seemingly endless supply of people trying to take him down. The betrayal produces Konstantin’s “accidental” death and fuels Alexander’s suspicion that Vladimir bought his way into the KGB by being a weasel. From here on we have two alternating stories - one as if they go to London and one as if they go to New York.
