I removed the nut clip with my fingers, and added a large steel washer, before mounting the clip back on. Normal nuts, bolts and studs seem to do fine for everything else under the car… I had the fun combo of some big holes in the shield, but also some terribly corroded stupid hexagonal fasteners to remove everywhere the shield hadn’t holed.

All the "filler" that's supposed hold my shield in place just isn't there and it moves a LOT since really only one bolt is holding it. Make a couple of big square washers from a bean tin, folded a couple of times and a small hole made with a nail. When used to retain the side plastic undercovers, rust does eventually kill them and they let the undercover droop if your lucky, if not, I've heard that when too many fail due to rusting, the undercovers drop down onto the road, but you would need to be very short of checking things over to end up in that situation - a friend's daughter did lose one from her old Polo, so much for "garage of dad" ! Ford have used exactly the same clips on their heat shields, so to say they are not suitable for heat shields is incorrect.

And over the next 20 – 30k miles or so before I sold the car on I had no problems whatsoever, even when the silencer corroded, holed and was leaking exhaust gas under the car. lately when i accerlate my exhaust rattle but i dont see anything loose or anythng when i jack it up nothing looks loose. These two types of clips are different for many reasons, they are intended to be used for different purposes, the smaller thicker ones are only used for securing thick and heavy sound proofing, the bigger thinner and more flexible ones are or as time goes on, were used for securing heat shields and plastic undercovers. I took off the lower exhaust manifold heat shield and removed the metal flanged sleeves that the bolts go through. I've bought the smaller thicker ones recently but that was only to fit one in a position that VW did not find the need to, the springy/flexible larger ones I've used for years on my older cars, nowadays these are only used to secure heat shields, their use in lower temperature locations has now been stopped and plastic nuts have replaced them in newer cars. The shield corrodes around where it contacts the clips and you end up with a big hole around the clip – galvanic corrosion I assume. When it comes to fitting them, I use a 10mm deep socket and a rubber mallet to tap them onto the threaded stud, then use a set of long nose pliers in the circular holes to twist the clip clockwise for some extra tightness. Had the rattle b4 and I thought something broke underneath, it was getting annoying when I had to remote start it everyday. i think you can see my exhaust in my signature and you can see both of them pointed down instead of straight up. I'm thinking about just replacing the bands with the adjustable bands you see on rubber couplings at Home Depot for joining ABS plastic pipe or cast iron pipe like the 3 or 4" bands.

Heat-shields are usually attached to studs welded to the underside of the car, so you’re limited to the torque you can apply before shearing off the welded stud. well I removed mine and the noise was still there at 1200 rpm after reading through this thread the other only option is to replace the exhaust manifold pipe with out replacing the catalytic converter . Edit:- no need to start drilling extra holes in the body to use a pop rivet, just use what is there. Annoying because I could of left the car with them, now I will have to take it back again, that's assuming they will do it under warranty, if not I will fit a large washer and find a way to stop it cracking any further! Recently I had the opportunity to easily get underneath my Note and noticed that some of the exhaust heat shield clips are missing from the rear section, presumably corroded and fallen off. uk/itm/VW-AUDI-POLO-GOLF-PASSAT-UNDERTRAY-UNDER-ENGINE-WASHERS-BONNET-INSULATION-COVER/190889268876? Annoying knocking coming from the rear for a few weeks now, crawled under the rear and found a couple of these have corroded and fallen off making the sheild loose, could that really be the cause of the knocking, that simple ?

Someone said to me that the rear end of the heat shield isn't really necessary and can safely be removed. Fix depends on whether its the heatshield that's corroded away around the fixing, or the fixing that's corroded away or fallen off. It drives me nuts, because at that exact location I get a deep hum and vibration that I feel in the car, the steering wheel, and my feet.

I looked up myself before posting a few listings and they too came up with VW transporter, Golf fitment. The views expressed herein are those of the individual contributors and not necessarily those of BRISKODA or SKODA. The only reason an exhaust centre will ever fix it back on is if it is easier than removing the remaining bolts. So that means that you will need to make up some thin metal disc patches/repair washers to cover these holes when you go to fit new retainers.
