About this deal

The RVI Infirmary is a familiar place to thousands of people and keeping the storyline between the hospital and the University held my interest.

When the officer in charge of the case turns up dead, it falls upon Detective Chief Inspector Ryan to take up the baton and find the person responsible. The reason is that I think, if you are new to the series there are things better left unsaid so that you can discover them for yourself, just as we did when reading Holy Island. Tom Bateman as Ryan and Kevin Whately as Frank Phillips are perfectly cast and capture the nuances of the characters superbly. The members of The Circle the cult that he had infiltrated and destroyed in “Holy Land” seem to have reemerged. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight, while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation. It is an awe inspiring and amazing listen that will stay with you in your heart and generally enhance and improve your literary life. This book would be a good place for new comers to the series to start, but if you have read the later books don't let this put you off.

Plus, it has the added bonus of making the mystery a sort of ‘locked room’ type affair because the island is cut off from the mainland during high tides twice each day. The first novel has proven to be a well-balanced blend of police procedural with great characterization and just enough romance to make you even more invested in the plight of the characters. The girl has apparently been killed during the Summer Solstice, which gives the case some connection to the occult. For those of you who have read this series we get to learn more about Ryan and how he started on Holy Island when we follow him on a catch me if you can investigation when the chief inspector goes missing.

I enjoy audiobooks very much and this dramatised version works very effectively, taking audio to a new level, with appropriate background sounds and multiple voices giving a great sense of imagery, I could picture the story unfolding easily. After the birth of her son, Ross wrote the first draft of Holy Island, having been inspired by the atmospheric beauty of Lindisfarne, an island off the northeast coast of England she knew well from childhood.
