Tracing the paths of immigration and poverty, Tran's moving and exceptionally readable memoir is at once heartbreaking, shocking, and hopeful. The claims department never coughs up this kind of money without a fight, but she wants the truth more than she wants the twenty grand. In 2018, the story was told in the first season of Tell Me a Story, a serialized drama that interweaves The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel "into an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge, and murder.Playing as Jack is similar to playing as Cole, with only two major differences: he doesn't have a partner and he does not get to change outfits (which means Jack does not have access to the extra protection, ammo, or strength provided by Cole's various outfits). As Tran gets older, she is forced to navigate the clash between her unfamiliar school environment and her parents’ Buddhist faith and their impoverished circumstances. This beautifully written “masterclass in memoir” ( Elle ) recounts a young girl ’ s journey from war-torn Vietnam to Queens, New York, “showcas[ing] the tremendous power we have to alter the fates of others, step into their lives and shift the odds in favor of greater opportunity” ( Star Tribune , Minneapolis). Soon after they arrive, Ly joins her parents and three older brothers in sewing ties and cummerbunds piecemeal on their living room floor to make ends meet. Probably a bit fictionalized with all the dialogue, but I’m okay with a bit of creative license in memoirs since memory is a fickle thing to begin with.

That’s very much the case here, and the story of the hopeless places Tran goes and her ultimate journey back makes for affecting reading. There are many voices featured in this memoir: Ly’s voice, her mother’s voice, and her father’s voice in particular. Once that's done, you can build your roof by creating two triangles with sticks glued to them, just like slats.This is an excellent memoir: if a bit of a traditional “young immigrant overcomes obstacles and makes good” story, there’s a reason we love that story, and this one is told well and with nuance. These are things that have a limited life or even things that may represent a high-risk level to our project or team. Once you arrive at the subdivision office, walk into the construction trailer to the left and examine the desks to find three clues.
