Hens have got a funny smell with them, one that comes, I think, from their feathers, just as a man will have his own smell about him. This is a wonderful and very clever piece of fiction about how we tend to remember things from our past fondly while forgetting about how bad things really were. They should have known better than anyone that love would have made Angharard far, far more happier than marrying someone rich.

How Green Was My Valley”: A Memorable Novel Set in Wales “How Green Was My Valley”: A Memorable Novel Set in Wales

Directed by John Ford, How Green Was My Valley was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. Then potatoes, mashed, boiled and roast, and cabbage and cauliflower, or peas or beans and sometimes when the weather was good, all of them together. I had seen the film but years ago and I was struck when reading this by the similarities to the more recent film "Brassed Off" about the colliery closings in northern England (Yorkshire? It was no doubt a true enough refection on how badly miners and other such workers were treated in those days, it really made me glad not to live in such crappy, hopeless times.Although as an older and more critical reader I do somewhat understand those reviewers who have found Richard Llewellyn's How Green Was My Valley perhaps not quite nitty gritty and harshly descriptive enough with regard to showing and presenting what life used to be like in the mining towns of Wales, personally, I still have to admit that rereading How Green Was My Valley for the first time since I totally devoured this novel when we read it for school in 1982 has been in every way as much of a pleasure now as it had been then. It does capture something of Wales, I think -- parts of it made me feel hiraeth so fiercely -- and parts of the story are compelling, but I don't want to pine after a long-gone Wales. A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides that feature detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, quotes, and essay topics. Lovely writing in this story of a Welsh family in a coal-mining village (I think in the Rhondda valley area altough the author didn't specify) from about 1890 to 1910.

Truly the most lyrical and beautiful book I have ever read, I'll be all set to pick it up again in another ten years or so. Appreciated the Guide to Pronunciation of Welsh names that’s in the back of the book, even though it was only somewhat helpful. Huw is awarded a scholarship to university, but to his father's dismay he refuses it to work in the mines. Philip Dunne looks back at movies' golden age: [SA2 Edition]Jim Bawden Toronto Star January 27, 1990: G8. I felt like I had been very patiently waiting for the author to set the stage and give me all of the background and let me get to know the characters. This timeless classic won the National Book award and Huw and his family and their struggles and joy will stay in my mind for a long time to come. In 1966 one of these coal-tip mountains collapsed in an avalanche that killed nearly an entire school house full of children and teachers in Aberfan. Although acclaimed by critics, literary contemporaries and commentators, How Green Was My Valley perplexed mining communities. Then I was not afraid, for I was in a long line that had no beginning, and no end, and the hand of his father grasped my father's hand, and his hand was in mine, and my unborn son took my right hand, and all, up and down the line stretched from Time That Was, to Time That Is, and is not yet, raised their hands to show the link, and we found that we were one, born of Woman, Son of Man, had in the Image, fashioned in the Womb by the Will of God, the eternal Father.

I still stubbornly would hype myself up about getting another couple chapters in, but inevitably would have to admit. I was rather hopeful more than a couple of times assuming that this was where the plot would thicken, but no, nothing really happened, and my life hasn't improved by me reading this. The movie tells of the Morgans, a hard-working Welsh mining family living in the heart of the South Wales Valleys during the 19th century.

The prose is so lyrical I found myself reading it aloud to my dogs, who are used to my declamations, often in dialect.
