About this deal

I did not include collaborations or revisions because some of those works may still be under the co-author’s copyright. But I've been on a Lovecraft kick lately and I'm glad I finally finished most of his work, moving onto Eldritch Tales soon and that's me completed all of his fiction - as far as I know. Written as an epistolary short story, it gives an account of the discovery of Cthulhu via a series of documents left behind by the great uncle of the narrator, Francis Wayland Thurston. From the feline-filled city of Ulthar (where the only law is that no one may kill a cat) to the onyx nation of Inganok, Kadath truly does mimic the atmosphere of our most random dreams.

Lovecraft (Howard P.) Collection - Brown University Library

I’ve enjoyed reading these tales this past month and I really looked forward to my lunch hour at work because I could read my next Lovecraft story. The "magic" sometimes found in his stories, even spells read from books like the Necronomicon, are likewise means of bending reality in ways Man Was Not Meant to Know, but ultimately his creatures are aliens, not demons, and his supernatural horror stems from science perverted beyond recognition, not from arcane witchcraft. The Shadow Out of Time is most notable for delving so thoroughly into Yithian culture and history, explaining their original cosmic purpose: to study all forms of civilization throughout space and time. This story is a rattling precursor to The Shadow Over Innsmouth, written a couple years later, which would bring Lovecraft’s ideas about human-monster spawn to full fruition. For instance, Dyer and another colleague discover the remains of massive, inhuman architecture, along with etchings that explain the evolution of the Elder Things and imply their eventual migration into the ocean.

What else could your typical, barely-sociable, angst-fueled teenager come across that could possibly be more alluring than a scrumptious posterior: nothing. Most of whom walk in an odd shambling manner and have unusual facial features, including flat noses and “bulgy, stary eyes. Horror fiction isn't usually my genre of choice, but I've heard people cite Lovecraft for so long that I felt a duty to read him and see what all the fuss is about. It’s allegedly based on a true story, but Lovecraft (much like his frequently skeptical narrators) believed Houdini’s personal account to be fabricated, and so took a good deal of artistic license as he was writing it. The type is a nice size; it’s very readable, though the margins are a little tight (kinda close to mass-market paperback margins, though the books feel nothing like one). But though everyone else questions his sanity, Chandraputra is the only one who understands the full truth — which is actually even more unbelievable than he’s letting on.

The H. P. Lovecraft Collection: Deluxe 6-Volume Box Set

The books may not be 'complete' in that every one of Lovecraft's stories are present, however, all the major ones and most well known are here. The paper itself also feels like nice quality and not like it’s going to tear or fall apart under use or notation. I totally understand the "Jaws" method of horror, wherein the less you see of the monster, the more effective it is. Then he died under mysterious circumstances that everybody knew was because of the spooky thing, but nobody would admit.

Those walking the streets of Innsmouth are the resulting offspring — as they mature, they will grow to resemble the Deep Ones, eventually joining them in their underwater cities.

The H. P. Lovecraft Collection

Indeed, I am more likely to read this edition because having Lovecraft's work split into several smaller volumes instead of one breeze-block of a thing is much easier on my wrists, plus the fabric covers are a joy to hold. In "At The Mountains of Madness", if I'd had a dollar for every time Lovecraft used the words "decadent" and"demoniac", I could have purchased a very big yacht, or a very small country. As more details of the creature and its history come to light, our narrator realizes that no one can possibly be safe from such a powerful entity — not even himself. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore.
