About this deal

As soon as the work day is over, I switch back over to my novel, and then the evening hours fly by until it’s time for wine (and hopefully my husband is making dinner). This book kept us up reading late at night, and is perfect for those looking for a heart racing thriller! Readers who love lighter suspense and a healthy dose of interpersonal drama won’t find this to be a negative at all; in fact, they will love the glimpses into campus life and young adulthood that Winstead gives her readers in her book’s first section. Winstead’s clever insights into her characters’ complicated lives and motives will keep readers glued to the page. With that said, the most important thing I have done is to work on no longer feeling ashamed of myself or anything that’s happened to me.

I love how the author takes a dive into the psyche of each character, pulling out the devious and manipulative tendencies that lie within all of them. Glory days, unbreakable friendships, all-night parties and a belief that the best in life is ahead of you.

The younger brother of the murdered girl has remained at the University for the past ten years and now works on campus. Definitely had shades of The Girls Are All So Nice Here with the reunion theme and something terrible happening while they were at school. These interactions form patterns of behavior that concretize over time until, often, the way we behave is more a matter of habit.

Then, one of their group was savagely murdered and a member of the group was accused, but then let go for lack of evidence. While I am a massive John Hughes fan and have seen all of his movies a million times, this thriller came up slightly short for me. Right now, it’s You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat, Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan, Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen, and More Than Just a Pretty Face by Syed Masood. I loved the writing style with the jumping back and forth in time, and I love that it’s mostly told in Jessica’s POV but we also get singular chapters from some of the other characters. Playful and irreverent, spine-tingling and spooky, The September House puts a fresh spin on the classic haunted house story, delivering an immersive tale about the secrets lurking within one building’s walls, and within the lives of its inhabitants. For me personally, IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE didn’t fully hook me until just before the 100 page mark. Heather’s brother now works at Duquette and he finds a way to get the remaining “friends” together to help him solve what the authorities have given up on. Huge thanks to Vanessa and her publisher for giving us this early sneak peek—I can’t wait to read BLOOD SISTERS this fall! She has lived in Texas her entire life, and her background and education is in the Criminal Justice field. IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE lures readers into its world alongside its characters slowly but surely, before snapping closed the trap that has been carefully laid around them.
