Ink Blood Sister Scribe follows sisters Joanna and Esther who have been around magical books their whole lives and have been taught to protect the books. She had unusually sharp canine teeth in an otherwise soft mouth, an incongruity that did funny things to Esther’s blood flow.

Un fantasy libroso/stregonesco che interpreta a suo modo quello che consideriamo il "potere" di una biblioteca, con libri raccolti, tramandati, custoditi e inseguiti nei secoli. Books that let a person walk through walls or manipulate the elements--books of magic that half-sisters Joanna and Esther have been raised to revere and protect. I absolutely loved this and really enjoyed how suspenseful, immersive and lush the world building was.Her estranged older sister Esther moves between countries and jobs, constantly changing, never staying anywhere longer than a year, desperate to avoid the deadly magic that killed her mother. While the plot concluded nicely, the characters had finally found their stride, and I was really enjoying the relationships starting to flourish. Protecting these books has caused these characters to exist but not truly live, and as the book progresses and their lives entwine, as they experience love and companionship they slowly begin to realise that perhaps magic was never meant to be theirs alone.

Meanwhile, in the incredible magical Library, a pampered and carefully protected young man begins to discover truths about the Library and his role in it. Shucked from her plane layers, Pearl was tall and tough, with a pile of sun-streaked hair wadded into a precarious knot that seemed in danger of sliding off her head.

I really liked the premise of this book, the idea of books of magic and curses is so awesome and honestly to me books are magical. In Emma Törzs's Ink Blood Sister Scribe, the first word of the title plays an important role: By mixing blood with herbs, people can make ink with magical properties. I imagine,” she said, “that six months of unwanted celibacy plus a planeful of new faces could make an extrovert of anyone. I was especially drawn to the family at the center of the story: half-sisters Esther and Joanna, their late father Abe, and Joanna's mother (and Esther's stepmother) Cecily.

Because not only was it true, she was nervous, butterfly-stomached in a way she hadn’t felt for years . So much of the story was consumed with setting up the story that the narrative wasn’t engaging, and it was easy to zone out while reading. In Ink Blood Sister Scribe, magic flows through some families like blood, and the worldbuilding perfectly exemplifies that concept by making blood necessary for ritual spellwork. Especially when it comes to Fantasy, I've got a preference for things that aren't set in our current world, and definitely not in our current time. In response, she’d given Pearl her most confident, reassuring smile, then set her teeth very gently to the inside of Pearl’s bare thigh, which had been enough of a distraction that the conversation ended there. I struggled to connect with Joanna’s POV the most as I found her chapters a bit dull compared to the others. Abel tells his new friends the curse will only be lifted if the film gets a soundtrack, which Montserrat has the skills to provide.

Nicholas is trapped within his warded mansion, he’s surrounded by employed staff, but feels he has never made deep connections with any of them, not even his former tutor Maram, Collins nor his uncle, Richard. I loved the second half of the story; the pacing issues were resolved and all the monotonous set-up vanished in favor of actual action.Joanna lives in their family home in Vermont and is now the sole protector of their magical books, each night she must reset the wards which stop outsiders from discovering where they are, thus meaning Joanna can never leave home for long.
