And the third, and best, of them is about a young man who is struck by lightning after taking a hit of acid and his soul is transfered into the body of a newborn baby. The second film (The Soft Touch 10/10) is a top-notch drama that, for me at least, hit close to home. The second concerns a very disturbed couple with a newborn baby, and their wacky neighbor who moves into the flat above them.

In 2001 he directed a 15-minute film for Gene's song "Is It Over" which is taken from the album Libertine. In 2007, Welsh published If You Liked School You'll Love Work, his first collection of short stories in over a decade. Whereas Trainspotting is told in a cacophonous surround sound, Marabou Stork Nightmares (1995) is a monologue. Uneasy to watch in places, it is no less than very well written, 2 of the stories having a darkly comic twist to them while the 2nd story a serious (and shockingly realistic) plot to it. Bobby Gillespie’s memoir, Tenement Kid, starts by documenting Gillespie’s Glaswegian working-class background and ends in 1991, as Primal Scream prepare to release their Mercury prize-winning album, Screamadelica. When he comes to he is in the body of a newborn child to a middle class couple (played by Martin Clunes and Gemma Redgrave). Instead this is a few minutes of the film and it builds to a rather crude conclusion featuring graphic sexual acts and scenes of excrement and bodily functions. He added, "The producers of this British pic have said that they wanted the film to be 100% uncut, undiluted Irvine Welsh, and that’s exactly what it is, for better or worse.

The Granton Star Cause features (fat) Boab, a down on his luck twenty something who loses his place on the football team, his girlfriend and his house in quick succession. Boab's decline becomes a catalogue of flashy techniques - swooping aerial shots, freeze-frames, even a bit of blurred Wong Kar-Wai slo-mo. Larry is one of the funniest, most realistic, characters I've ever seen in any movie and Gary McCormack plays him to absolute perfection. This film needs to be watched during a particularly bad hangover, wearing only underpants with holes in them, while eating cold pizza from the night before and sucking on your first hair-of-the-dog beer. The characters in this extraordinary book are often - on the surface - depraved, vicious, cowardly and manipulative, but their essential humanity is never undermined. In some English-speaking countries such as Canada and the US, it was screened with subtitles because of the Scots vernacular and heavy Edinburgh accents. Their lives are a sad reflection of a miserable existence of the lower classes sweetened by only one thing. As for the precocious baby, I found it rather weird and unsettling and one that only a mother could love.

It also delivers a vivid portrait of Gillespie’s early working-class life, at times permeated with strong anti-Tory sentiment: “Of course,” says Gillespie, “I’m from Glasgow, there’s got to be. But the pitch-black scatological farce doesn't gain from so many in-your-face close-ups of flies dabbling in shit and bilious curries. The movie is a bit graphic, just the way I like it, but I can see some people (nerds and/or bible thumpers) getting offended. The first story features Robert Anthony Coyle, more commonly known as Boab, a fat, lazy, unambitious loser still living at home with his parents at the age of 23. It's not so much a criticism as it is a perspective; the ambiguity worked well in Trainspotting and added to the overall tone of the humour whereas The Acid House crosses the line and tells us that this sort of thing is possible in the film's universe. The result: a serious trip as losers turn into flies, husbands are betrayed and a baby swaps minds with an acid head. If you look at that album [ Vanishing Point], Throb’s got an equal songwriting credit to everyone else.

He went on to study for an MBA at Heriot Watt University, writing his thesis on creating equal opportunities for women. When all seems lost, God makes it possible for Boab Coyle to avenge himself on numerous people who have been more than unkind to him.Earlier this year, Gillespie released Utopian Ashes, an album of duets with Savages singer Jehnny Beth.
