To collect new goods, you can either pick up one card for free, take multiple cards (but you must replace these with cards from your hand) or scoop up any and all camels on the market. Folks in smaller spaces, or those who like to have room for snacks and drinks on their play surface, may be annoyed by its sprawl. But the alternative is to sell, and it’s best to sell sets, but how can you collect a set without taking cards? This makes the selling mechanic really interesting as you try to read the other player to figure out what they plan on doing. Where the selling mechanic becomes interesting is that you have a couple different things to consider when selling cards.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Despite feeling cramped in terms of card movement, the play grid occupies quite a large space on a table. Each turn you’ll take one action, either plucking shiny new goods from the market – a shared, constantly replenishing central row of five cards – or cashing cards in from your hand for the goods and bonus tokens that’ll score you points. You select a fully assembled deck representing one of six factions, each of which has unique powers and encourages different play styles. To start, players draw cards from a common row that contains both materials (diamonds, gold, silver, cloth, spice, leather) and camels (essentially a less-valuable commodity that you can use for strategic purposes). The selling aspect of the game is also pretty typical of the genre as collecting more cards of a set always gives you a greater benefit as that is what the whole genre is built around.

Even swapping cards could help your opponent as you could put out cards they need for one of their sets. Therefore the faster you sell goods of a type the higher the likelihood that you will get the most valuable tokens. The player that has the best cards revealed before their turns is going to have a pretty big advantage in the game. Of course, herein lies the rub; the risks and rewards of the game lie in what you take and what you sell. But beware, because this also means your opponent will get an extra-rich selection of new cards to choose from. In exchange for these new cards though the player has to replace them with the same number of cards from their hand. The only somewhat unique thing is that you aren’t dealt cards and instead take cards from a set of face up cards. It’s a really clever, fleshed-out hand management game with clever mechanics that would work really well completely separate from each other, let alone all tied into one! Finally if a player sells five or more cards of the same color they will receive a five bonus token which is worth between 8-10 points.

When you take a single card or all of the camel cards you are putting new cards into the market for the other player to take. You have many things to keep track of, on both your own and your opponent’s side of the board, as well as multiple ways to win. In this complex, involved game, you keep track of multiple goals as you compete for a limited set of resources to develop the most impressive ancient city.

Jaipur board game review: the essential two-player game | T3

The camels can’t be sold but they have use on future turns as you can exchange them for other cards in the market. Every turn, you can either draw one card from the common row, trade cards from the row for cards you hold, or sell materials for points.Any camels in your hand are immediately placed down in front of you to form your herd, which is going to come in handy. I also think you could teach the game to kids a few years younger than the recommended age and they shouldn’t really have any issues with the game.
