This made the album easier to remix with greater sonic clarity, because we had so much more individual control over each track. In 1971, before they recorded the strings in New York, John, Yoko and Phil did a stereo mix at Ascot Sound Studios, and having that original mix without strings helped in matching the new mixes to the originals.
