About this deal

All told, it’s a fine whisky to start off an evening, but there’s nothing overwhelmingly unique or compelling in focus here. It’s not only that the expressions changed, the whisky itself is now using a combination of peated an unpeated spirit across the entire lineup. Relatively short ferments give Jurabackground rigidity –meaning that this is a whisky thatneeds time (or active casks) to open fully.

Then, in 1963, two of the island’s landowners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, decided to start whisky-making once more –predominantly as an incentive to stop any further decline in the island’s population. A lovely beach followed and then a long road ride that culminated in wild camping at a staggeringly beautiful beach and cooking sausages at almost midnight. I took to looking through some of the reviews here and unfortunately agree with the few who have found it 'harsh' and 'bitter'. Jura Journey is the starting point of the new rage, a NAS scotch produced, as all the range, with a combination of peated and unpeated spirit that will give a slightly peated style. The path from our foundation to the rebirth of our distillery in 1963 has shaped character of our community and the whisky we produce. These deliciously smooth and sweet Sherry finished whiskies offer global travelers the opportunity to taste our bright and lively whiskies finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks of varying ages. But new or old, this is still an unmistakable Jura whisky with the lactic vanilla and the wood notes (love it or hate it). This is why they’ve launched a new basic range, meant to turn the brand into one of the single malt scotch references.

The lactic vanilla is what makes this an obvious Jura, and the wood notes are the final nail in the coffin to identify this whiskey in their lineup. If could be very good for a party when your need something to knock you out, cuz it's easy-drinking one with no heavy bits. This perfect marriage of Jura and hand selected American white oak ex bourbon casks results in notes of creamy vanilla, pecan pie and a touch of soft cinnamon and fresh pear. The finish sees some caramel apple- and banana-driven fruitiness, but it never strays far from the course. A bit of lemon peel, some cut hay, and a modest nougat character add some needed nuance, but all is in service of the significant bill of granary notes.

Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. I shall keep the bottle for undiscerning, whisky-ignorant guests, or for making a hot toddy, where added honey might actually provide some flavour.I suppose everyone’s palette is different but I found this incredibly salty, harsh and bitter…just like one of my exes. The palate changes the calculus a little, as the rolling granary notes and a moderate punch of alcohol evoke a high-class blended Scotch. As is typical of youthful, bourbon-barreled single malts, the focus remains pretty squarely on the grain. From 2018, the core range of Jura has a subtly smoky character, from incorporating a small amount of peated spirit into the vattings.

It was, however, built in the 1960s with backing from a major blender, Mackinlay, and at that time light whisky was what was needed.

A: An outstanding bottle of whiskey, but lacking that special something which makes for a true masterpiece. Finish: Medium length, gentle peat smoke, lingering oak spices bitterness, dryness, honey and bit of vanilla. Amber gold in colour with aromas of vanilla spice, citrus and a hint of sea spray, followed by cinnamon, pears, pecans and toffee fudge in the aftertaste. A great collection of unique whiskies that are smooth, bright and lively, just like the tiny island community who make them.
