I just finished a four day Rim to Rim Grand Canyon trip with this pack and it performed magnificently. Air mesh and decent padding in shoulder straps and back panel of the pack reach all the way down to the hip belt as well. It all comes down to this: when you have to pack 40 lbs of gear in a backpack, would you rather carry it in a 0. There was one feature that I had to seek for with a magnifying glass, and that was the method by which you can attach your walking sticks to the Kestrel.A good backpanel will be properly ventilated and allow your back to breathe while you’re wearing the packso that you don’t get sweaty and smelly. At the Broke Backpacker, we totally love Osprey backpacks because they consistently produce quality packs and gear that is durable, comfortable, and affordable. But even in that case, the benefit of a small and lightweight backpack is immediately apparent: I am able to move much more freely than I am accustomed to, and I am able to take significant steps up or to the side without the Kestrel getting in the way.

Tall people don’t necessarily have long torsos, just as shorter people don’t always have a short torso length. This really is a workhorse of a pack that can cope with long days out, multi-day trips and lightweight world travel; the 48 litre size allows enough room for all your essentials without encouraging you to overload your pack. My main gripe is that the metal frame ventilation system on the back makes the Osprey Kestrel backpack a little more sturdy and inflexible than I would like so it can sometimes be a bit challenging to deep pack. I actually had to send an old Osprey backpack back to the company as it was impossible to reattach the sternum strap clip to the rail, despite my best efforts. Since hip muscles are the largest muscles in your body, they should be carrying most of the pack’s weight.If you're planning extended camping trips (5+ days) with lots of long distances of walking it probably won't fill the bill due to its medium-large size and deficient suspension with heavy loads. The Kestrel 48 features a traditional lid access into the pack that also allows some downward compression if the pack is partially loaded, and you can also get in through a side access zip that makes it super easy to get at your stuff.
