About this deal

These little white lies are unfortunate, but they are a general part of social interaction and getting to know a person. LET ME LIE is heart-tugging, tense, and subtle… so subtle, in fact, that I didn’t even know how wrong everything I thought I knew was until the book’s gut-punch ending. They cause pain not only because of the deceit involved, but also because they hide an equally hurtful truth. In this case, you should thank them for their honesty and discuss how you can move forward together.

So, if a friend lied to you when you were both 18 and you’ve only now discovered the lie when you’re 30, you might consider it to be water under the bridge and chalk it down to adolescent immaturity. The poignant lines within Let Me Go are a good reminder that no matter how difficult it is to say goodbye to someone, or how well you know or loved them, every one of us will go through the same journey at some point. Despite all the great things about Let Me Lie by Clare Mackintosh, there was just something about it that didn’t make me go ‘wow, I love this. What makes this story so enthralling for me was that while I was reading, I felt that this could happen to anyone.

One is to make him memorable in the minds of his readers as a “sailor” or a “hunter” (in their metaphorical sense). Don’t get me wrong - Anna and her family members have their own layered and complex relationship that is quite compelling. With this story, we do receive multiple POVs that alternate mainly between the main character and the police officer investigating the crime. Murray cares for her and supports her and loves her unconditionally—a truly endearing (albeit also quite tragic) storyline that offsets the drama and darkness of Anna’s family beautifully. For one, you might start to wonder whether these little lies are just the tip of the iceberg and that there’s much worse that you don’t know about.

The police ruled her parents death a suicide but on the anniversary of their death Anna receives an ominous, anonymous note suggesting otherwise. There were some well-timed twists that really surprised me, though I did see a few of the others coming. While I did not love Let Me Lie quite as much as I Let You Go, this was a great read with a story unlike anything I’ve read before. My only downside to this one was that it is a very slow burn, and while I expected it to be a slow building suspense, at times I found myself putting it down because I could sense my attention span waning. Drake is a next door neighbor who always seems to be a bit too interested in what is going on at the Johnson house.

Written in flowing, rhyming prose, the piece features comforting imagery and a thoughtful ending that alludes to dying not necessarily being the end. Being lied to by a coworker of acquaintance will probably annoy you somewhat, but it might not cut to the bone. I keep hearing rave reviews about MacKintosh’s initial book — I Let You Go— but this one and her previous one — I See You, which I read last year — were just meh. But, in all fairness of honest disclosure, at certain points in the book I felt the dreaded THREE STAR rating looming in the distance. This was a Traveling Sisters group read and I always love hearing the perspectives from my buddies, they always add a fresh take to my perspective. Anna’s life is a bored to read mainly because she’s in a grieving process and feeling spooked at every turn due to the unexpected mail she received.

Move away from the stilted storylines and give us, once more, the purity and the essence of I Let You Go. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to visit Iceland, or if you’re curious about attending a crime fiction festival in the future, I highly recommend adding Iceland Noir to your bucket list. The characters in this book walk that delicate line between being ordinary without being boring, and being entertaining without being unrealistic in their moments of drama. For all of you who follow my reviews I think you all are pretty much aware that I pretty much love and enjoy most of the books that I read and I hand out a lot of 4 and 5 star ratings. I couldn’t help but love this character who, in spite of his own pressing problems, continues to try to help Anna.
