How can you explain to non-disabled children that disability is just another regular part of a disabled person's life, not something they constantly think about and worry over and focus on? Things to Know: While this book is highly inclusive, we would have loved to see even more representation like families with members who have disabilities, gender non conforming adults and kids, and gender variance in how characters dressed.

This book is extremely inclusive and is gentle when bringing up topics like this within a classroom setting. Overall, I feel as if the story truly touches on so many different representations of what families can look like. When teaching an LGBTQ+ text like "Love Makes a Family," an affirmative approach would be most appropriate.Many of the vocabulary words in this unit do not come directly from the texts, but instead offer more precise words students can use to articulate how a character is feeling.

Prior to teaching the unit, identify if any of your students have family types that are not represented and make a plan for how to bring their experiences into the unit. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the black text really stood out on this shiny board book. Use the intellectual preparation protocol and the Unit Launch to determine which support students will need.Students will also analyze character relationships and notice how relationships impact a character's feelings and actions, particularly in regard to family relationships. After reading this book, I was able to relate to it personally and how important it is to have the open mind becoming a teacher. The illustrations are vibrant and depict a diverse range of loving families spending time enjoying each other's company. Since we aren't going to be perfect, we just have to aim for better, and these books - and so many like them - can help us get there.

In reality, not every child is fortunate to have both of their parents alive or even involved in their life. The main idea is to focus on the idea of love makes a family, regardless of how your family is made up. It is one of the most inclusive stories I've ever read and it is perfectly suited for young readers. Diversity 8: I want to know about other people and how our lives and experiences are the same and different.But when he's approached by one kid after the other after the other at the playground who all ask him what happened to him, and offer up their own absurd theories about his missing leg, he doesn't want to answer them. Ensuring that students see a wide range of families and experiences is crucial for helping students make sense of the world around them.

In some cases you may know in advance if a student has a tricky home life, and you should take steps to ensure that you use trauma-informed practices to make the student feel safe.Love Makes a Family was a heartwarming read that I’d heartily recommend to families of all shapes and sizes. If work is an issue, then see them on your off days, or at least be bothered to see them every week. We appreciate the many different family configurations represented in the book and the racial diversity in the beautifully drawn characters. At the same time, people are limited, fallible, short-sighted, and selfish, so that many biological families have had difficult relationships and sometimes dreadfully so. I liked the illustrations as I felt that the colors really popped off the pages and I liked the different activities that each of the families were participating in.
