About this deal

Lyra Belacqua ( / ˈ l aɪ r ə b ə ˈ l ɑː k w ə/ LY-rə bə- LAH-kwə), also known as Lyra Silvertongue, is the heroine of Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials. Lyra is described as having wavy dirty-blonde hair and pale-blue eyes, and is thin and short for her age.

His Dark Materials | Potential spin-offs and sequels after

In the most recent edition of The Amber Spyglass released in the UK, the post-script "Lantern Slides" section shows Lyra studying the alethiometer (a rare truth-telling device) with Pantalaimon at age18. A future together for the children and their developing love seemed to be closed in the last volume of the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass. That probably wouldn’t be a popular idea with fans of the novels, but it would allow them to bring back fan favourite characters who have been definitively killed off or otherwise removed from the books’ universe (the most prominent being Will). It was apparently debarred by the terms of the voluntary self-sacrifice needed to save their alternative Oxfords, and the multiple worlds around them. The books have more of an epic feel to the first trilogy, and could probably sustain even more seasons if the BBC were so inclined. Lyra must separate from Pantalaimon when she enters the Land of the Dead in The Amber Spyglass, causing extreme pain to both of them; Pantalaimon avoids Lyra for a while afterwards. It introduces two new characters who clearly have legs for future adventures: the shrewd, friendly young scholar Dr Polstead, and the reputedly mad alchemist Sebastian Makepeace.

The title of her dissertation is Developments of patterns of trade in the European Arctic region with particular reference to independent balloon carriage (1950–1970). In the book, a 24-year-old Scoresby and his daemon Hester have their first encounter with the race of intelligent polar bears who populate Pullman’s world when he lands his air ship in the harbour town of Novy Odense. She receives a scant and haphazard education at the hands of Jordan scholars, being neither interested in study nor officially a student of the college. Lyra Belacqua, aged around eleven at the beginning of the trilogy, is the daughter of Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter in a fictional Oxford, similar to our own.

Personally I have been wanting to juxtapose Lyra's alethiometer with the stunning instruments in our collection that inspired Philip Pullman in a truly immersive display for many years, so for me this is a dream come true. The book follows 11-year-old Malcolm Polstead and 15-year-old Alice as they protect an infant Lyra from dark forces. In the novella, Lyra encounters a daemon in the shape of a bird, which claims that its human (a witch) has an illness that causes daemons to be severed from their hosts. Port Meadow: In Northern Lights, this is the site of the Horse Fair where the disappearance of a young boy ‘from a gyptian family she knew’ helps to trigger Lyra’s adventures.

This trilogy is the most likely candidate for a follow-up adaptation, both due to its length and its subject matter. Botanic Gardens Bench: In The Amber Spyglass, Lyra and Will promise to sit on this bench at the back of the Botanic Gardens for an hour at noon on Midsummer’s Day every year so that they may feel each other’s presence next to one another in their own worlds.

It is one of those grand narrative strokes that Pullman can sometimes pull off with such casual-looking ease and faith. Both Scoresby and Byrnison are fan favourite characters, and characters certainly wouldn’t complain about a miniseries or one-ff that gave them another chance to spend a little time with both. She is being brought up at Jordan College, where the scholars, professors and servants treat her as an adopted daughter. In common with dæmons of all children, he can take any animal form he pleases; he first appears in the story as a dark brown moth.
