About this deal

It isn’t sufficient to just read their thoughts about love and how they feel about each other, the reader in me craved more. I do enjoy the way the author manages to some people up in just a few words and yet you really see them. But when a toxic and dreaded past comes to haunt Harriet, leaving her career, friendship, and reputation in jeopardy, she must stand up for herself and risk her future to share the truth. Given the subject matter mentioned, the story here is certainly not all light and fluffy, and I do think McFarlane deserves credit for the way she is able to juxtapose darker subject material alongside a contemporary romance, and generally strike the balance right. When they find out that they are exactly strangers to each other things get a little bit awkward and Harriet overhears Cal making some rather disparaging remarks about her.

The more I thought about, the more issues I had besides this not being a romance book though it is promoted as one. There are some enjoyable coincidences and several scenes that are almost movie or TV worthy they are so lively and entertaining. All of which to say, this is a highly insufficient review to really get across just how much I loved this book. While Harriet is working through her relationship with Cal, and dealing with Jon’s persistent almost-stalking, she meets a former boyfriend at another wedding she is working. Then it all came together because I thought, ‘What about making a terrible safe choice after the experience, and that also going wrong? So why does he blindside her with a very public marriage proposal at his (ghastly) parents 40th wedding celebration? She adds: “There were an awful lot of bakeries, and everybody seemed to live in West London, and it was very cupcake-y. Additionally, early on in the narrative, there are hints that point to Harriet having had a traumatic experience in her 20s. HarperCollins), in which Edie accidentally kisses the groom at a wedding and finds herself shamed on social media and retreating home to Nottingham, is possibly my favourite. I just don't think McFarlane ever just showed us that Harriet was keeping her head buried about way too many things and her judgement seemed off.

Harriet Hatley is the most in-demand wedding photographer in town, but she doesn’t believe in romance, loathes the idea of marriage, and thinks chocolate fountains are an abomination. The book's female protagonist is an in-demand wedding photographer who loathes romance and does not want to get married (loved that! My family were shocked because they spent five years thinking they were going to have to sit me down and tell me it was never going to happen,” she says. There’s the humour, the romance, the friendship, and the balance of the narrative as it treads along heavier topics—all of it ties together into a book which, although it might not be my outright favourite of McFarlane’s, is up there among them. This is my second book by this author and I remember the first one being a normal trope but being very well written and making it different and unusual.

I liked the self-realization of getting out of a toxic situation (whether romantic or “breaking up” with a friend who doesn’t have your best interest), but the whole storyline with trying to run an intervention with a complete stranger about her relationship with your ex – and moreso that you are surprised when things backfire – was just a bit much for me.She moved swiftly across the room, sliding the ring from her finger and placing it on a French chest of drawers, then turned and folded her arms. I cannot wait for a re-read of the US release in August 2022 so that I can share tons of highlighted quotes on GR. Harriet is faced with a dilemma when she discovers that Scott is getting married to a sweet girl named Mary Ann. I went into a zone in my mind where I was like, because writing a novel is a serious thing, my novel should have a very serious tone,” she says. McFarlane has been one of my favorite authors since her debut, You Had Me At Hello, rarely putting a foot wrong.

I had never seen anybody talk about how, when you have had one really crap relationship, you do tend to make crap choices while you are getting your head together as well.

Everyone loves this charmer but behind closed doors, he is a gaslighter, controller, and an emotional abuser. When Harriet’s ex-boyfriend makes a stunning accusation, Harriet is forced to confront her past as she figures out what she wants for the future. It is not romantic to a great extent; it is not comic except for a few scattered scenes; it is not light-hearted at all.
