Having grown up with a great respect for the mugumo, or spreading fig tree, Maathai eventually became a veterinary doctor, a university professor, and a woman who encouraged other women to plant trees, thereby combatting the deforestation of her country, and all the ills it brought. A lovely, stirring picture book with a simple message for us all: in the midst of change, development, and upheaval, there is always a place for wisdom and peace. If not, I can move on to a different classmate and think together until I find a reason that matches my opinion, or place.

This title was okay but only as a backup of additional info to last year's WAW title Planting the trees of Kenya : the story of Wangari Maathai Planting the Trees of Kenya: The Story of Wangari Maathai I thought Planting the Trees of Kenya was better information and had more depth to the story. Circulate to support students as they watercolor and invite them to describe the place that they are painting. Mama Miti is a gorgeous picture book that tells the story of Wangari Maathai the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Women can no longer feed their children, since plantations for rich people have replaced food-growing farms. Most noteworthy is Nelson’s vibrant collage artwork, which features soaring portraits and lush landscapes in oil paint and printed fabrics.Prévot also exposes the hypocritical behavior of moneyed Kenyans in the post-colonial period and their collusion with international capital. A few years ago, words such as ‘food’, ‘poverty’ and ‘hunger’ would not have been readily associated with children and families here in the UK. Its main weakness (for me) was that in the main part of the story, women come to Maathai with problems and each time she tells them to plant trees and explains how the trees will solve their problems. The way Napoli and Nelson portrayed Wangari made me want to meet the Mother of Trees and receive her wisdom about nature and peace. The illustrations are absolutely stunning and are reason enough to include this book in a collection.

Starting on page 1, as you read, use gestures and text-based questions to confirm student understanding.His Thunder Rose, written by Jerdine Nolen, was a Coretta Scott King Honor Book for Illustration, his Ellington Was Not a Street written by Ntozake Shange, received the Coretta Scott King Medal for Illustration and his Hewitt Anderson's Great Big Life, written by Jerdine Nolen, won the 2005 Society of Illustrators Gold Medal. Both books are wonderful and can be used in tandem to showcase Wangari Maathai and her incredible work. Mama Miti does not mention Wangari Maathai's university education, her conflicts with the police, or her arrests.

I know it’s not out-out yet, but I am incredibly lucky to know that it’s a story which, when it is out-out, will be one children will be flocking to in droves! Rivers are muddy—the soil has been washed away by rain because there are no tree roots to hold it back. While this works within the story, the fact that she is a well educated woman with a PhD might have been worked into the story to emphasize the importance of education imo. Many of the others were more biographical, but this one focused on the individual difference that Maathai made in the lives of Kenyan women.
