About this deal

Right before Sayuri can make her debut as a geisha, her world is changed when World War II begins In 1944. The official reason for the ban also includes Zhang Ziyi’s scene where she takes a bath with a Japanese man. I would have liked her to interact more with him during the course of the story but it wasn’t really necessary.

Another reader suggested that perhaps the superficiality of the story is intentional, and that the book, in a way, resembles a geisha. It was also made into a film, which I’ve been avoiding, knowing that I wanted to read the book first. He thanked Iwasaki by name in the book’s acknowledgements, which caused Iawaski to receive strong and threatening backlash because geishas have a traditional code of silence about their clients. It's much more of an ensemble piece, and I was especially impressed by the young Sayuri and Ken Watanabe. Mameha, another famous geisha in Gion, persuades a reluctant Mother to reinvest in Chiyo's training, with Mameha acting as Chiyo's mentor and "older sister". Fashions among ladies of her age tend towards the frumpy, but Mrs Iwasaki's clothes - a black trouser suit and red sweater - are expensively simple. And yet somehow I hadn't imagined a great wave might come and strike me there, and wash everything away.

A Geisha would never leave her okiya without this act being performed as it was believed it brought good luck.I could feel Sayuri’s misery and fear as she had to make decisions that would ultimately hurt people dear to her, from Pumpkin to Nobu. A few years later, Chiyo is given money and a handkerchief in the street by a kind stranger known to Chiyo as the Chairman. So it is a shock and a thrill to look from the photograph to the woman holding them, and to realise that they are the same person - Mineko Iwasaki, the greatest of the Kyoto geisha. Over the next two years, Chiyo completes her geisha training and makes her debut as an apprentice geisha.
