Overall I found this a worthwhile read and one that seemed quite different to many of the books I I've read. Many assumptions have been made on the part of the reader, and to full effect – including the accuracy of the pill-dispensing clock, their trust in the pills doing their job, Aina’s watch telling the right time, keeping time, Whitney’s faith in the Warden who will offer them parole, and that certain supplies haven’t run out. Most music has 4, 3, or 2 beats per measure, which is denoted in musical notation by beats such as 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, and 2/2. Dedicated hardware metronomes may be looked on as something of a redundancy to DAW-based musicians, as all computer-based workstations have a built-in metronome of some sort to keep you in time while recording new parts. They’ve kept busy – Aina with her garden, her jigsaw, her music; Whitney with his sculptures and maps – but something is not right.

Whilst I'm not sure Metronome brings anything new to the genre, I did enjoy the atmospheric descriptions and Watson did a good job of making the couple's predicament believable. The connection to the sculptures is not obvious at first but once the connection is made, coupled with Whitney’s own artworks, it is explosive.
