Undaunted, we teamed up and approached a number of designers to pitch us Minecraft board game concepts. For a few months, I had the pleasure of working on a team that created an entirely new Minecraft experience, and I want to tell you all about how we did it. Final Score: 3 Stars – An easy game to teach with a breezy feel, but not enough meat on the bones to keep gamers playing it regularly. My kids are in love with Minecraft and that put me on a path to find as many Minecraft worksheets and Printable Minecraft Activities as I possibly could.

Players could travel through the intersection of game tiles, flipping over rooms (later, biomes), monsters, and items, much like they can in the final game. Since Minecraft isn’t limited to a medieval fantasy theme, and players can build whatever they’d like, a small number of builds didn’t follow any particular theme, such as the dance floor, train station, or potion bottle. After feedback that rooms should be biomes, some of Ulrich’s early designs featured different kinds of buildings.The players pile their respective standees at the center intersection and the player who most recently found a diamond in Minecraft (yes, the video game) goes first. I have six kids ages 12 to 23, and even today we will play Minecraft together for hours and argue about our favorite characters over dinner. The game is straightforward and at times a little too basic for anyone that has moved on from family games.

The cube assembled at the start of the game, with each of the blocks being taken just the bottom layer of resources remain. Heroes of the Village tasks players with protecting their Minecraft village from raiding Illagers by banding together to collect resources and fend off the mobs that will try to slow them down. If the number of hearts on the weapon tiles is equal to or greater than the mob’s, it is defeated and EXP is gained, as well as some specialties based on the mob. Players make and destroy various kinds of blocks in three-dimensional worlds – the clue is in the name. Players draw three tiles, and some of the advanced weapons may give players another tile, experience points (aka victory points), or a block from the cube.These new Minecraft board games look to capture the feel and style of the iconic sandbox game, and will hopefully be a welcome addition to the collection of any dedicated fan.
