Romanzo del 1943 dello scrittore e giornalista britannico Graham Greene nella prima edizione Mondadori del 1946 con la traduzione di Pietro Leoni. There is also an echo, in the phrase “I know too much”, of Hitchcock’s film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), the latter part of which is set in London (Hitchcock made another version with the same title in 1956). When Rowe announces he is leaving the sanatorium, the doctor threatens him with being confined to the ‘sick bay’.

The Doctor's own room is number 11, which serves as a double entendre, alluding both to the real Room 101, and to the fact that the then-incumbent, Matt Smith, was the eleventh actor to fulfill a starring role as the Doctor. Convicted of murder for the mercy killing of his wife, he has just been released from a psychiatric prison. Rowe loses his memory and a different novel takes over, where he’s in a hospital that he suspects is not exactly taking good care of him, or its other patients.Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector’s Library is a series of beautifully bound gift editions of much loved classic titles. In keeping with the concept of doublethink, the ministry is thus aptly named in that it creates/manufactures "truth" in the Newspeak sense of the word. In a review at the time of release, Bosley Crowther of The New York Times wrote positively of Ministry of Fear, stating: "Mr. Rowe takes his cake back to his lodgings in Guilford Street (which is still there, running from Russell Square to Gray’s Inn Road). Internally, there is toning to the page block, but with no signs of foxing to the page block or to the inner text.It is an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete rising 300 metres (980ft) into the air, containing over 3000 rooms above ground. To try to find out more about the people who are pursuing him, Rowe consults the Orthotex private detective agency 'at the unravaged end of Chancery Lane'; a private detective agency will also feature in The End of the Affair (1951). Though Greene intended the novel to be, as he put it in his memoir Ways of Escape(The Bodley Head, 1980), "a funny and fantastic thriller" – inspired to an extent by a Michael Innes book he'd recently read – there's an unexpected depth to it as well.

Perpetual warfare also "helps preserve the special mental atmosphere that a hierarchical society needs. In the book, Rowe slips the poison into his wife's milk – "how queer it tastes," she says – and leaves her to die alone. As well as his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, three books of autobiography, two of biography and four books for children. Within the novel, Orwell elaborates that the deeper reason for its existence, the "why", is to maintain the illusion that the Party is absolute. He felt as though he were in a strange country without any maps to help him, trying to get his position by the stars. We can see Rowe as an example of an existential hero or anti-hero akin to the protagonists of Jean-Paul Sartre’s La Nausée [ Nausea] (1938) or Albert Camus’s L’Étranger [ The Outsider] (1942), even though existentialism, as a philosophy, would not be popularized until after World War Two. Orwell, George, 'The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and the English Genius' (1941) in The Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters of George Orwell: Volume II: My Country Right or Left 1940-1943, ed. A storyteller of genius,” Graham Greene composed his serpentine mystery of authentic wartime espionage—and one the author’s personal favorites—while working for MI6 (Evelyn Waugh). In five hundred years' time, to the historian writing the Decline and Fall of the British Empire, this little episode would not exist.

Knightsbridge and Sloane Street were not at war, but Chelsea was, and Battersea was in the front line. While it's tempting to say that what differentiates literary fiction from the genre novel is that the former resembles life while the latter resembles only other novels, this is the very distinction that The Ministry of Fear overturns. Internally, pages are unmarked, clean and bright throughout, with some light foxing to top of the text block edge. In the 2011 Doctor Who episode " The God Complex", the Doctor and his companions find themselves in a hotel full of their own personal Room 101s, each with their greatest fear in it.Book is in clean faux leather boards, with bright gilt lettering, and some rubbing to spine ends and corners. There are dreams which belong only partly in the unconscious; these are the dreams we remember on waking so vividly that we deliberately continue them, and so fall asleep again and wake and sleep and the dream goes on without interruption, with a thread of logic the pure dream doesn't possess.
