About this deal

I have these transformers which have been attached since 2000, see photo below, can you please advise if I have made a mistake in choosing the correct bulbs for the job? I don’t think you would find much problem using LED MR16’s under a loft hood, especially some of the newer models which are even lower power than the first generation of LED MR16’s. I’m currently doing a brand new extension at the moment, the gu10 downlighters I have gone for are fire rated, mains volatage.

My MR16’s all have a box in line to the light which I assume is the converter if that makes it easier? Hi Rakesh, So that specific transformer is rated to work between 50W and 150W – this means that the minimum load that needs to be used is 50W, and the maximum load is 150W.Also, don’t LED bulbs cause a problem with an initial power spike in the transformer as opposed to tungsten bulbs which have a fixed load? Using just 10% of the energy to power them means that they are going to deliver really significant savings on your energy bills. I’m considering changing our existing spots in the house to LED which are MR16 50W halogen bulbs connected in a series of 3 to an Aurora AU-150 transformer rated 50-150VA. The correct MR16 LED Driver/Transformer is an investment for your MR16 LED bulb ensuring maximum lifespan and perfect operation. I always thought the purpose of the different bases was to keep 12vDC bulbs from going into 220VAC, (or 120vAC here in the states), and going poof!

As a result MR16 bulbs need an external transformer to convert the buildings main 240 volts mains supply to the 12 volts required to run the bulbs. If the transformer is designed for use with 50W halogen type bulbs, then it may not be rated to work on lower powered lightbulbs. Philips Hue MR16 smart bulbs are as bright as a 35 W halogen bulb, so they're the perfect smart upgrade from conventional bulbs (and with colour light, they’re even more of an upgrade). The fundamental difference between LED driver and 12VAC electronic transformer outputs can be found further down the page. I don’t think there’d be much problem swapping over to LED, especially coloured LED’s as they are normally very low wattage. The first thing is to determine the type of spotlight you have in your home – you can use our diagram below to determine which one you have.

Bulbs intended for use in wet zones (such as downlights in a bathroom) must be IP rated for such use. If you can share the specs on the LED lamps and weather there is a circuit in the lamp and how are the LEDs connected (in series back to back or in parallel) I can help you with the specs for the optimum driver.

You don't require a driver, a driver should be built into the MR16 package which controls the current to the LED's there are some incorrectly labelled drivers which regulate voltage rather than current, however there output is DC. The MR16 is a multifaceted reflector bulbs, compatible for lighting fittings from track lights to pendant fixtures and suitable for a wide variety of applications including commercial and domestic. I know that GU10 LED 220V on a dimmer they should be sold as dimmable, but if you use MR16 12V with a dimmable driver, are 12V LED bulbs already dimmable and OK for say 3-12V? Halogen spotlights are a form of incandescent light bulb that use a tungsten filament and a mix of inert and halogen gases to produce light.

MR16 LED Transformer - MEAN WELL Direct

I never understood if the energy consumption of LEDs is measured including the transformator or not. These are most commonly used in integrated kitchen fittings, where space is at a premium and smaller bulbs are a necessity. Pulling put bulb cable didn't reveal any transformer per bulb so I'm assuming there is only one transformer powering all halogen bulbs.I have checked several sellers of the same bulb, and they all are using what looks to be a manufacturer’s graphic image of the specs, not text. which will then take your power output above the lower end of your transformer and the flickering will stop.
