Anyone familiar with photography may recognize this dual output setup as something akin to shooting in RAW and JPEG. Auto Level Mode / Manual Mode AUTO LEVEL mode allows the app to select best choices for your recording needs. This isn’t Shure’s fault - Windows famously isn’t great at handling multiple audio sources - but it is worth keeping in mind. If you don’t have the time to deal with manual settings, you can rely on Shure’s auto mode to do all of the heavy lifting.

Shure-ly however, the real strength of the MV 7 resides in its expert microphone technology combined with a truly effective yet user-friendly interface – making the Shure MV 7 a solid investment for the future, even for newcomers. Not sure why they didn't go with a USB-C or have a locking system in place for the USB cable, it's very flimsy. A dedicated digital signal processor (DSP) inside the mic remembers the app settings between devices — switching from your PC to your PlayStation 4 doesn’t impact the settings. He's been covering games and tech for over ten years and has written for Dualshockers, WCCFtech, Tom's Guide, and a bunch of other places on the world wide web. The MV7 is a Zoom Certified Microphone as part of their Zoom Personal Workspace Certified Hardware collection, so that you can also use your MV7 for virtual meetings seamlessly when working from home. For studio users on the other hand, or anyone with the necessary extra gear, it functions as a simple, great quality ‘regular’ dynamic microphone.

These two mics are very similar to one another and both offer excellent vocal reproduction and an attractive Elvis-style design. The MV7 is smaller, with a shorter windscreen in the front that easily pops off to reveal the actual microphone underneath. In use, the Shure MV7 is a dream for beginners, or anyone who needs a mic but doesn’t necessarily need to know how it works. Not at all, but we believe Shure's spot on when it describes it as a ' podcast microphone, inspired by the legendary SM7B'. In truth both microphones cover similar ground, but they've been developed for slightly different markets. You'll know that the connection is made when you see the desktop application display the correct microphone settings. The Shure MV7 is a phenomenal piece of recording equipment, and despite its small size is able to really throw its weight around. There are plenty of frequency responses to choose from, which is great if you have a specific sound in mind. Connectivity isn’t just restricted to using your PC or Mac – the MV7 can also be connected to tablets and smartphones using the USB-C cable and the MOTIV app.

Choose your sound and pick your voice tone from either ‘ dark’, ‘ natural’ or ‘ bright’ within the ShurePlus™ MOTIV app. Fortunately, the Shure MV7 is an easy pick for content creators thanks to its dual XLR and USB outputs, a system that simplifies the recording process and makes backup audio files compulsory. This is augmented further by automatic adjustment of your audio levels - making sure that your voice and its volume stays the same without fluctuations. The mic itself does an excellent job of isolating my voice while ignoring the loud hums of my desktop PC, air conditioner, and any other ambient nonsense I have going on in the background.

Consequently, they don't paint as accurate a picture as a condenser microphone will, a trait that seems undesirable but can be a distinct advantage. Used for professional broadcasting and studio recording for decades, the SM7B has found renewed popularity with podcasters and online streamers. If are using Manual mode and notice the level reaches the input meter peak, switch to Auto Level or lower the mic gain.

At a top level, what you’re getting is a dual XLR/USB output – more on this later – dynamic mic which is geared primarily towards capturing speech in its various forms. The MV7 draws a lot of its design inspiration from the Shure SM7B, but the differences in design are easy to spot.

The necessary Lightning cable is an extra purchase you have to make, and if you have a USB-C iPad, then you’re sadly out of luck when it comes to compatibility entirely. Clearly inspired by the SM7B, the MV7 has a whole set of cool features for content creators and musicians.
