Description

The story follows the aftermath of the family of the youngest victim, Rose, from the perspective of her now 10-year-old brother, Jamie. The evolution of Jamie's relationships with people close to him are very well done in general, even if sometimes the outcome wasn't what he (or us readers) would have expected. The best thing about using such young mediums to tell a grown up story is that there are so many chances of saying the profoundest of things in the simplest of ways.

And this line, which reminds me of Lilo and Stitch (which also made me cry by the way), the part where Stitch "This is my family. I would recommend this book to all above-12s as it is written from a naïve point of view and in my view GENIUS! There are so many things I want to speak about and discuss but at the same time, I wonder if it wouldn’t be more appropriate to just ask you to please read this book. It's fabulous to see books aimed at Middle Grade readers tackling serious issues like islamophobia and grief age appropriately without bowing down to the happily ever after.

His father worships the urn that holds Rose’s remains, while drinking himself senseless to numb the pain. This book tackles many awkward/sensitive concepts such as young love, racism, divorce and death and how they can divide a family. Se aquele único espermatozóide do Papai não tivesse encontrado aquele único óvulo de Mamãe naquele exato momento, eu teria sido alguém diferente. His observations are pertinent and at times may, again unintentionally, make you snort out with laughter. The voice of Jamie is so real, and so natural and so funny it kept be going, as was his friend Sunya, who knows that she is also the odd one out, as well, because she is Muslim and wears a hijab, in very white, Christian school.

When we were leaving London, Dad spent about an hour trying to push his wardrobe through the bedroom door.Apart from this he has to deal with his mother’s abandonment for someone else that “understands her,” as he is no longer part of her life.

His father drinks and is so caught up in his memories of his dead daughter that he can't really see his living children. Another thing I adored was the fact that never once was the book patronising in the sense that Jamie was completely unaware of what was going on, and showed him growing as a person and understanding that he could no longer govern his life by his father's bitter bigotry, or continuously fantasise about his mother. At the end of the book, I felt really moved because no matter how many bad things were happening to Jamie and no matter how sad he was feeling, he still had to get up in the morning and go to school. Annabel Pitcher cleverly balances the underlying themes of bullying, racism, depression, and alcoholism with the excitement of forbidden friendship, hope, and ultimately the strength to move on.One last thing, the parts with Jamie and his fish from the pond were really moving and the imagery was simply beautiful. When his mum walks out on him, his dad and remaining sister, his dad turns to alcohol, and they move to the Lake District for a new start.

If you are the publisher or author and feel that they do not properly reflect the range of media opinion now available, send us a message with the mainstream reviews that you would like to see added. Jamie knows his father wouldn't approve of their friendship, as he hates Muslims and blames Rose's death on the entire Muslim population. Ale táto kniha mala postavy, ktoré som si ja osobne neskutočne zamiloval a to je dôvod, prečo má kniha odo mňa takmer plný počet hviezd. Roger’s death made him deal with his own inability to let Rose go, and the whole family is able to better process their grief over Rose’s death.Jamie grieves the loss of his family and his parents' marriage, but he doesn't cry over the sister he barely remembers. Naquela noite li tudo sobre o milagre que eu era, sentado no parapeito da janela com Roger enroscado a meus pés.
