About this deal

B.R Yeager illustrates this through the protagonists’ relationship to their parents who aren’t really characters of this novel in the conventional sense of the term. And she carried on: “My body was so full of adrenaline that, instead of screaming or fighting, I went still, and I went to work, with words. Most of the horror element is shown through animal abuse, and is purely there for shock factor as it's never even explained why there is animal abuse. But the controlled-panic response cannot last: Leach soon went to bed, and stayed there for three days. Yet none of them shy away from this doom, just like they don’t shy away from the overwhelming feelings of love and dread that feel them, or their sexuality and fragmented personalities and identities.

Most of his sentences are blunt, spiny and barely-lucid, but its through this bluntness combined with the viscerality of his imagery that the prose takes on a brutally stark poetic register. Horrifying in a compulsively readable way, Negative Space charts the erratic and disturbing movements of a group of teens living in a small New Hampshire town. The unique writing vivifies every incident and I don’t think there was a single scene from my first reading that I forgot, but everything on reread STILL took me by surprise and many of it hit even harder than last time. This list wouldn't be complete without mentioning perhaps the most famous use of negative space in a logo.

When Nike wanted to draw attention to the ultralight support in its Air Max 2017 trainers, ManvsMachine delivered a campaign that showed this through a series of visual metaphors inspired by scenarios encountered on an everyday run. The results can be stunning and can be particularly memorable for logo design and illustrations for posters and book covers, as we'll see below.

People in places like these (which I knew a thing or two about) have this sense of stillness they’re ferociously protecting: they don’t want anything to ever change. The characters and world building are mesmerizing, and if you pay close attention, you might be able to see fragments of your youth reflecting through the pages. As Lovecraft himself explains, all weird stories are characterised by “some strange suspension or violation of the galling limitations of time, space and natural law which forever imprison us and frustrate our curiosity about the infinite cosmic spaces beyond the radius of our sight and analysis. Sharing edges with the positive space, negative space defines the outline of the object and creates proportion. They usher platitudes to sweep under the rug the ugliest fucking things without even paying attention. In fact, everything that happens in Kinsfield is so egregiously violent that people just inexplicably live with it. Because of the long history of the use of black ink on white paper, " white space" is the term often used in graphics to identify the same separation.

When book designers talk about “negative space” they are talking primarily about unprinted areas of the page. There’s a lot of potential for re-reads to give clarity and make connections that weren’t apparent the first time around. Tyler is a Virgil-like, shamanic figure that guides us deeper and deeper into the WHORL-abusing, self-hanging, 4chan-posting underworld of Kinsfiled, Massachusets. They each last a couple of pages before seemingly disappearing from the collective consciousness of Kinsfield.

It doesn't matter if you're into Stephen King, Octavia Butler, Jack Ketchum or Shirley Jackson, this is the place to share that love and discuss to your heart's content. Negative space varies around lower case letters, allowing the human eye to distinguish each word rapidly as one distinctive item, rather than having to parse out what the words are in a string of letters that all present the same overall profile as in all caps. At times, the way Leach pitches such bodily being, and its artistic incarnation, against the abstractions of critical intelligence (including her own) can seem slightly too schematic. And when they can’t make sense of it all anymore, there is nowhere else to go and nothing else to do. Negative Space recognizes the dystopia of America in the late teens (it's weird saying that) of the twenty-first century. While I eventually was able to appreciate what Amydalatropolis did, by reframing 4chan posts as literary art, and revealing the absolute barbarism which lies at the "heart of darkness" which is the free, wild web, and that Yeager is perhaps the first novelist to ever UNDERSTAND the Internet and express this in a text worth reading--I adore Negative Space, because it does something wildly different exploration of a wildly different phenomena. It is the basis of why upper and lower case typography always is more legible than the use of all capital letters. The bald head and long pointy nose are instantly identifiable as Danny Devito's Penguin, which in turn, carves out the bold silhouette of Michael Keaton as Batman.
