Once the camera is in place it needs to be adjusted so the wide angle lens points forward and the zoom lens points rearward – these are clearly marked to make life easier. Generally, the Nextbase is much quicker to set up than the other dash cams, with neat magnetic mounts that make it much easier to remove the camera if you want to swap the unit to another car or protect it from theft.

This footage can then be plugged into some desktop computer software, compatible with both Mac and Windows, which shows GPS location plotted on a map, G-forces, speeds and other useful information. In the box is the dash camera itself, a long 12V power cable, a suction mount with a built-in GPS receiver, a data cable for connecting to a computer and a software CD-ROM, the contents from which can also be downloaded for free if your laptop has no CD drive. If the battery lasts for less than 3 minutes, the battery may have reached the end of it's lifespan. The touchscreen is easy and intuitive to use, but the real advantage of the Nextbase is the excellent PC/Mac or smartphone apps, which make accurate downloading and editing of footage extremely simple. The camera is split into two lenses, one facing forward and another that rotates backwards and has a 50-metre zoom.Please check that your Camviewer app is on the latest version available and that your phone has Wi-Fi turned on. That said, it was still clear enough to make out details and number plates, so it’s a small quibble. The rear camera impressed us with its clarity of footage, too, and we liked how easy it was to wire in. Unlike its two rivals, there is no LCD display to navigate menus and check the cameras’ views, so you’ll need to download an app to your phone and connect to the Gator’s built-in WiFi. This is tricky to get right with the Duo, since you have to delicately set the angle of the rear camera.
