About this deal

The graphic format is the embodiment of the suffrage rallycry of “Deeds not Words” and this book is the perfect sistervolume to their stunning adaptation of the socialist classic The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.

No Surrender by Scarlett and Sophie Rickard review – the long

We will introduce you exclusively to Newpay finance products provided by NewDay Limited under this Introducer Appointed Representative arrangement.Noted English suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, herself, described it as a book which “breathes the very spirit of our Women’s Movement. Jenny, Mary and Alice all have individual strengths and challenges, and there is something there to relate to. Colourful, powerful and amazingly enjoyable – this new version of Constance Maud’s suffragette classic as a graphic novel is a revelation. Hailed by Emily Wilding Davison as “a book which breathes the very spirit of our Women’s Movement”, the fast paced story interweaves the lives of women from all classes working together to bring about change.

Constance Maud’s No Surrender: A Graphic Novel by Scarlett

It displays the colours adopted by the suffragette cause as an early success in branding, and puts the women usually seen in black and white into a vivid and memorable setting. But in this case Constance Maud’s No Surrender, first published in 1911, is admittedly less celebrated despite its vital importance in depicting the fight for votes for women in the UK. Pioneering Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison loved it, pronouncing that it “breathes the very spirit of our women’s movement” – a spirit that lives on in this new graphic novel edition. Trapped beyond the perception of his friends, family and allies, Pietro must now wage a one-man guerilla war against a monster that he's not even sure is real - to save a world that he may never be a part of again!Books like Maud’s No Surrender have survived by being discovered by a narrow set of readers – historians and activists.

No Surrender review: graphic novel reworks Suffragette classic

I can thoroughly recommend it as a reading experience for anyone interested in the vital battle for rights in Britain with reference to other countries. In their hands, No Surrender is newly charming, its infelicities smoothed both by Sophie’s fleet way with speech bubbles and by Scarlett’s absolutely delightful illustrations. Jenny’s focus has become the fight for the vote for women which she sees is the route to equality before the law and genuine hope for women. No Surrender is a well-presented, substantial representation of a classic which deserves to be explored further.Unlike The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists the characters of No Surrender were entirely new to me so in terms of the dynamics of adapting this novel to the comics page my knowledge is limited.
