This is a very good/gentle introduction for people who have not read Chomsky's more technical political philosophy and may find themselves overwhelmed plodding through 10 different analyses of the same argument. One might justify publication of a series of dated essays if their dates were clearly indicated and the book were billed as an exposition of Noam Chomsky Thought as it has evolved. The Clinton doctrine was encapsulated in the slogan “multilateral when we can, unilateral when we must. In the 1950s, President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles explained quite clearly the dilemma that the United States faced. Its indiscriminate bombing of Sunni areas and other sectarian abuses after the withdrawal of US troops at the end of 2011, well before the rise of ISIS, led many Sunnis to see ISIS as a lesser evil.

Riot police line up outside a closed branch of the National Bank of Greece during a general strike in protest against austerity measures. There are good reasons to believe that a well-constructed police action, or even serious diplomatic negotiations with the Taliban, might have placed those suspected of the 9/11 crimes in American hands for trial and sentencing. It does demand an answer: what motivates us as societies and individuals to commit and/or tolerate the abuse of people present and future, and of the environment that sustains us? S. policies post-9/11, and the perils of valuing power above democracy and human rights In an incisive, thorough analysis of the current international situation, Noam Chomsky argues that the United States, through its military-first policies and its unstinting devotion to maintaining a world-spanning empire, is both risking catastrophe and wrecking the global commons. In 100 years, when Chomsky is understood as the definitive intellectual giant of our time, this will be the book historians reference. If we live in a country (or are citizen-expatriates), we pay taxes to finance the activities of our government.

Small wonder that President Obama advises us to look forward, not backward—a convenient doctrine for those who hold the clubs. Accordingly, China is proceeding to expand westward with extensive investments and careful moves toward integration. While the broader population is lulled into apathy--diverted to consumerism or hatred of the vulnerable--the corporations and the rich have increasingly been allowed to do as they please.

It is written as an overview—from a radical perspective—of a range of different foreign policy issues. Particularly in Iraq the United States suffered a severe defeat, abandoning its official war aims, and leaving the country under the influence of the sole victor, Iran. Beginning with his critique of the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Chomsky has become more widely known for his media criticism and political activism, and for his criticism of the foreign policy of the United States and other governments. However, by dwelling on only the negative, his latest book leaves the impression that America can do no good—that withdrawal and isolationism are the best we can hope for. He is also credited with the establishment of the Chomsky hierarchy, a classification of formal languages in terms of their generative power.
