Instead of running everything inside a special host, Automap was a relatively discreet service on your computer that communicated with special ‘wrapped’ versions of your plug‑ins. Previous MkIII firmware versions introduced micro-step editing that let users nudge notes off of the grid for slight timing variation. If the firmware update for your Novation device via Components fails, there are a number of troubleshooting steps we recommend trying. Not only does it make playing music enjoyable and cool (like Jean Michel Jarre does in his live shows! I’d prefer that the other way around so you can flip between rehearsing and recording with one hand.
The keys also flash when played, either directly or via the sequencer or arp, but this can be disabled independently for each source. Hitting the InControl button on the front panel will switch the hardware over to control whichever DAW is currently connected.Each of the eight parts now have individual, independent arpeggiators, for building complex polyrhythmic patterns.
The factory set on my unit contained a generic template plus templates for all Novation’s synths and a host of other, mostly contemporary, synths and drum machines.

To add a step you hold down an empty pad in Steps view, then play a note or chord on the keyboard (velocity is ignored unfortunately).A lot has changed since then though; for all its flexibility, the server-based Automap setup now looks exceptionally cumbersome compared to the plug-and-play compatibility offered by systems like NI’s NKS or Akai’s Advance range, and with the rise of Bluetooth MIDI and resurgence of CV, many musicians find that they need more from their controllers than simple USB and MIDI. If you're wanting a live performance tool, it's still one of the best options, but don't expect much from the sequencer. The keyboard is joined by solid-feeling pitch and mod wheels placed to the left, along with a generous crop of buttons, pads, rotaries and faders, and five clear LCD screens.
The keyboard feels very nice and all other hardware too except for the sliders, they feel a bit cheap. Input notes step-by-step, or record as you go; you can play and edit your sequences directly from the keyboard.Ableton Live users get the best deal, with near plug-and-play setup and tight interaction with most Live elements, including parameter feedback provided by the five screens. Templates from the unit can be retrieved from the list of all 64 Templates or pulled directly from one of the Templates currently being used in one of the 8 Parts. In this section, I recommend giving the SL MkIII a new name is the Device Name field to avoid any confusion. I’d like a more sophisticated sequencer - it’s great at what it does, but MMT8 style song creation functionality would be welcome. There’s a global Swing setting, but that’s it as far as timing variation goes: the micro‑step feature from Circuit is not implemented as yet.
