We then meet our main characters in the brothers Deo and Innocent who after seeing the soldiers take off running and the action never stops. Deo and Innocent are left with no options but to find their way to South Africa, and locate their father. During the Sierra Leone Civil War that started on March 23, 1991, the eleven-year armed conflict caused the displacement of many citizens and the conscription of child soldiers. Williams joins Beverly Naidoo and Allan Stratton with this incisive portrait of sub-Saharan Africa, a compelling mix of suspense, sports, and social injustice.

Like most issue books, this is not an easy read, but it's poignant and transcendent as Charlie breaks more and more before piecing herself back together. Formerly, he was deputy editor of the Independent on Sunday, executive editor of The Independent and head of news and features at the Sunday Times . Bernstein was an outstanding book giving insight about three young Sudanese boys fighting for freedom. They are not welcomed in South Africa because the people there are struggling and they don’t want refugee’s taking their jobs and food.Aleman’s narrative joins the ranks of heart-wrenching stories of migrant families who have been separated. I remember reading The Kite Runner years ago and being shocked how little I knew about that conflict. In other words, Charlie grows and changes throughout the novel in many different ways, especially from start to finish. Please see the supplementary resources provided below for other helpful content related to this book. He keeps an eye on his very special older brother Innocent, a sweet but damaged young man who suffered a brain injury at birth.

After spending time in treatment with other young women like her—who cut, burn, poke, and otherwise hurt themselves—Charlie is released and takes a bus from the Twin Cities to Tucson to be closer to Mikey, a boy she "like-likes" but who had pined for Ellis instead. Along the way, they face the prejudice and poverty that greet refugees everywhere, but eventually Deo finds hope, joining dozens of other homeless, displaced teens on the World Cup Street Soccer team--a possible ticket out of extreme hardship to a new life. His brother is easily nervous, easily happy but good at keeping score on the dusty fields of Zimbabwe where the boys play.

While reading this novel, I paid great attention to the experiences that the young boys encountered, and how it affected them. Wouldn't really recommend it but I preferred this to some of the other books I've had to read for school in the past. As they make their way towards South Africa and freedom, Deo and Innocent have many harrowing experiences and they encounter some less than scrupulous characters. This book is so hard to sum up because I read it at least two years ago and it is still fresh in my mind. And the whole thing, rather beautifully, begins and ends with football - if there is one thing that connects boys in almost every country and can break down barriers, football is it. Enjoyable and eye-opening tale of the protagonists woes as an economic migrant from Zimbabwe, to greener pastures in South Africa.it was just as good as the previous book Never Fall Down however I fell in love with the characters of Innocent and his gentle genius ways and of course the real and quick thinking Deo combined for a rare treat I can see men and women, boys and girls enjoying. Mateo’s self-awareness and inner monologue at times make him seem older than 16, and, with significant turmoil in the main plot, some side elements feel underdeveloped. I read the book, Now is the Time for Running by Michael Williams about 2 brothers trying to stay alive in Zimbabwe while soldiers attack their village.
