I was therefore grateful to receive this bottle as a gift, and happy to be reviewing it for you now. The Old Forester bourbon ticks all the flavorsome boxes you can expect of a bourbon, from sweet vanilla, toffee and caramel, to oak and nuts. The sweetness of the mid-palate gives way to a dark chocolate feel with a flake of salt, a hint of masa, and plenty of wintry spice leading back to that dark stone fruit with tobacco dryness at the very end. He has been writing about and professionally reviewing bourbon since 2020 (and has been drinking it for much longer).

The juice is aged in a fairly heavily charred oak barrel for an undisclosed amount of time (the youngest barrel is likely older than four years). To put it another way: no distillery in the late ‘90s was laying down the liquid necessary to satisfy the voracious thirst of today.

They quickly dissipate and leave a long-lingering finish without further introduction of new flavors, but a pleasing end to those introduced on the palate. First a mixture of fine Nussigkeit comes here again and the citrus notes in the form of rather bitter than sour grapefruit, then the Manuka honey, fine toffee and vanilla, cinnamon, anise, nutmeg, some eucalyptus, then again to hazelnut and peanut, as well as beautiful fresh oak, to discover something for a Bourbon, very nice! The end holds onto the spice but focuses more on anise (and maybe fennel) while the caramel and spice attach to sticky tobacco with a warming end. The mouth feel with this bourbon is one of my favorites, I like how Blake mentions the viscous/syrupy characteristics. Colorwise, the Old Forester bourbon has a warm and clear amber and copper balance that shines in the light.
